This is a beautiful historical fiction about an outlier who runs away from service during the Civil War to find his sweetheart. I was able to see a different perspective of the Civil War and how it affected not only the people fighting it, but also people who lived in remote places. The epilogue is very unpredictable and is quite surprising. In a way this book is a tragedy but readers will feel good afterwards. Inman, the soldier, and Ada, Inman's sweetheart, tells different view of the Civil War, but paints on the same canvas until they intertwine their colors into a beautiful ending.

A sequel to "A Game of Thrones", this book is truly amazing. I just am in love with this series. Martin has done a masterful job of creating an extremely unique "fantasy land" based on feudal Europe. While there are the typical new types of flora and fauna, Martin's universe differs from ours by the creative way he plays with the seasons. While the universe is remarkably internally contained and consistent, what really sets this series apart is the characters. They are extremely well developed, and Martin does not allow his plots to fall into the "good guy, bad guy" patterns. While some characters are more evil or much more benevolent than others, they all have their strengths and faults. The problem often becomes that you want too many different people to "win".
