Second-person story of a failed writer coked up and partying in the 1980s. Very funny, but the end, when he deals with his dead mother, doesn’t seem earned.

Not scintillating literature for sure but was useful when I got my bad dogs. They are not well behaved, but it is not because of this book. The book was useful.

Another audiobook. I enjoyed this book, although I think I might have gotten more out of it if I had actually read it. There are a number of minor characters, and I had trouble keeping them straight. I think if I could have seen their names written down I might have been able to differentiate between them. I liked the concept of the book: two people living in the same apartment building discover they are alike in their intellectual isolation and become friends. One of them is the concierge, who is in her forties, and the other is Renee has a tendency to

a difficult movie and text, but one that is necessary to confront, especially because it is too easy with the access of media and information to become oversaturated with images, rather than the 'meaning', of trauma. hiroshima. rwanda. bergen-belsen. Lanzman resists the expected telling of the Holocaust story; focusing not as much on the typically "dramatic" and "emotional", which he eschews for a more analytical, methodical unfolding of history. It is disturbing in its straightforwardness. Lanzman manages what no one was supposed to be able to do; re-tell a period of traumatic history that defies retelling.
I actually listened to this on audio CD. It was enjoyable.

fascinating account of a strange, gifted man. it made me think about how we treat the mentally ill and how we make use of our gifts. a long biography, but NOT one filled with arcane details that made me yawn. and amazingly, the movie did the book justice.

I really liked this novel... quite a page turner. It was graphic at times, but we're talking about the Holocaust here. I appreciated the author's frankness and honesty in writing about the atrocities suffered by all during the war. I thought it was interesting to read about the war from a German woman's perspective. I liked the fact that reading this reminded me that the world isn't always black and white. There is always a gray area. Anna was a very intriguing character to me. At times I hated her for her weaknesses. At other times, I admired her for her strength. But, either way, I was so saddened at all the atrocities that she suffered throughout the novel. I wasn't thrilled with the ending. I thought it was a bit choppy and I just wasn't satisfied with how everything came together. This novel was very similar to Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. If you liked it, you'd probably like this as well.
