Favorite book of 6th grade.
I love anything written by Alexander McCall Smith and pray that he never dies because then I wouldn't have any more of his books to read. He is at once folksy, extremely literate, and pushes me to do further research into philosophy and culture. What more could a reader want? Alexander, I love you!
Timely read with events in the middle east. The sisters characters were well developed and each unique. Interesting family story told by the author. Being educated was key in abandoning the fears of Dominican dictatorship. Recommend highly

I just finished reading this book for the second time. In my opinion, it's underrated & under-appreciated, but not perfect. Morrison bases the novel's structure on a jazz riff. The more familiar you are with jazz composition, the more you will appreciate her use of form. She really does follow through in this regard. The first time I read the book (in high school, I think) I was left the the distinct impression that all the "interesting stuff" happened at the beginning. Reading it this time around, however, I felt that Morrison sustains a compelling narrative throughout the whole book with two major exceptions: the section on Golden Gray, one of the main characters' ancestors, goes on for way too long given its meager significance to the plot & the ending felt a bit deflated. Nonetheless, I think Jazz is a beautiful read.

Nicholas Wade has put into one cohesive book - based on compiling hundreds of scientists' work - a flowing, incredibly reconstructed history of humans before history. Through archaeology, genetics (and not always human genetics) and logic, Wade shows persuasive and ingenious arguments for many human milestones: when we became anatomically modern; when we became behaviorally modern; when, where and how agriculture developed; when language evolved and what the first language sounded like; when music evolved; when form-fitting clothing developed; when animals first became domesticated... It explores why humans are so warlike (it's a pretty rare trait in an animal), but also why we cooperate with non-kin (even more rare in animals). It also addresses some non-PC subjects, but without judgment, and wholly in pursuit of truth. Anyway, great book.
My favorite chapter is on Paste Jewelery and Sawdust Hotdogs. Reading Manning elicits tears from my eyes. I was moved by the humility and compassion that he shares after wrenching out the honest brutal truth of seeing what sin does to the lives of people. The telling of a man in an AA meeting who is in denial about his addiction is heart wrenching!
I devoured this book. Read it!

2 1/2 stars. Felt the ending was a bit rushed and tied up too neatly. I enjoyed her first novel much more than this one. I found the main character---Sarah--- hard to like. Other reviewers have mentioned how "fully formed" the characters are in this novel, but I didn't find this to be true for me at all. The final kiss of death, for me, was the recommendation on the back by Jodi Picoult. The book actually read like a Picoult novel to me in a way that her first novel definitely did not.
