Emma is one of the few books I'd recommend that a reader check out the movie version first. The book can get overwhelming with so many characters to keep track of; the movie can help sort them all out.

I loved this book when I was little.
Loved this book. I found myself laughing out loud many times. Can't wait to read her next book.

I enjoyed the premise of the book, and it was an enjoyable read. Although, I must say that I did find the love between Seth and Miriam a bit too contrived. Also, tying God into a fictional story that appeals to all people is difficult, and I found that this book wavered too often between Christian fiction and your classical thriller story...
This is the story of two neighbors living in Tuscany. They were both looking for solitude and a beautiful view. Each was told by (the same) realtor that they had a foreign neighbor who was only present one month per year and was very quiet. And so begins a classic comedy of errors... It reminds me (a little) of Alexander McCall Smith's Portuguese Irregular Verbs series. The best part of the book is the recipes. Gerald Samper fancies himself a culinary genius. He is definitely not afraid to experiment with ingredients!
Marvel takes some of its most beloved characters and transplants them to the early 20th century in this series of books, Noir. Deadpool gets the same treatment in "Pulp" placed as he is between WW2 and Vietnam. The plot is that America and Russia are deep in the Cold War and Outlaw is stealing a briefcase of nuclear secrets from the Americans for her Communist masters - what she didn't count on was her former lover, Deadpool, out to stop her. The story is pulpy enough for the series, lots of men in hats and trenchcoats with guns in alleys, big band night clubs and plenty of smoking, shadows in every panel. Deadpool's uniform is redone to make it look more basic and he even looks better than he normally does. There are some regular Deadpool fight scenes where the blades come out and the bizarre quips come as thick and fast as the blood, but mostly it feels more Raymond Chandler than your regular Marvel comic. The artwork is really excellent, kind of like Sean Phillips' stuff, a shade Steve Epting, and the covers are exquisite. While the writing is never bad, it's not stellar either but keeps the story ticking over nicely until the explosive end. The idea of putting Marvel heroes back in the 20th century and taking back their powers so that they're less invincible and slightly more realistic is an interesting one. Readers of the literature of the time (50s/60s novels) will recognise some of the more famous storylines' tropes present here so it captures the zeitgeist more effectively. I found it an interesting read with some great art, very enjoyable.

Okay, I'll be honest. This is one of the very, very few books that I have ever in my life not finished. I made it about 60% of the way through before I had to just close it out and say enough. Like another reviewer has already mentioned, I found the title somewhat misleading. Yes, I did read the synopsis when I got the book, but between that time and when I actually began reading it, I forgot what it was about. When you're looking at an e-book at 2 in the morning, all you have to go on is the title and the cover. This appears to be nothing more than your typical romance novel, perhaps one on the juicy side. It is anything but. It is most assuredly a Christian romance, with heavy emphasis on the Christian. Now, I am not one to normally seek out Christian fiction, but I don't have a problem reading it, in general. This book even starts out as a lovely story on the subject of a young man coming to faith. But. When it got to the point of direct preaching and the discussion of why gay marriage was wrong and sinful, I had enough. I felt like I'd been transported into a hellfire and brimstone sermon by Jerry Fallwell, and this is not why I read fiction. In addition, I am firmly of the belief that it is not my duty in life to judge. Jesus said that the most important commandment is to love one another. Hate-filled rhetoric is not any way to show love to our fellow humans, no matter what you believe.

From a novelist and poet a collection of essays is a risky thing. From Alice Walker, it is a worthwhile risk. These essays comfort and inspire, tell the truth and fight for justice, demand a conversation and don't let up. I found I didn't agree with her always, but I didn't have to; images and fragments of poems have settled in my subconscious where they filter into my thinking and writing at the most unexpected times. Most telling: I pick up this book again and again, and it lives on my professional bookshelf, dog-eared and soft.
I'm sure this book just annoyed me.

Rereading this collection of interviews and miscellaneous prose pieces. Merrill's voice is always thrilling, and his insights into poetry, thoughtful and interesting. Pick it up if you love his poems.
