I read this way after I watched the series on tv and I was pretty disappointed in the book. I have no idea why it was picked up for a tv show but I'm glad it was because, unlike most books, the movie was way better.

I found this book to be a great account of what happens when an auto plant in Detroit closes. Paul Clemens takes you inside the Budd Auto Plant right after its closing. The first part of the book is a history of various Detroit plants and then a meeting with the UAW representative who represented the workers in the Budd Plant who describes what happens at that point to the workers. He then moves on to hanging out with the riggers and the cleaning crew who take apart the machines and parts of the assembly lines to go to the people who won them in auctions who are coming from China, Brazil, Germany, Canada, and Mexico. The interviews with members of the staff who come in to clean out the plant and liquidate the machines are very informative. These are usually people with very little education or people who have a hard time finding regular employment who have negative views of union workers or have worked on the assembly lines themselves at one time. One employee discussed how he “wanted to work at Ford’s” and managed to do so. Another gives an interesting take that he worked to put the assembly lines together for a living, and then it came to a point where he had to learn how to take assembly lines apart to earn a living. A lot of great insights and humoring moments in the book when it comes to our dying manufacturing industry in America, and the fall of Detroit’s auto plants for cheaper production and outsourcing.

Enjoyed every page and the relationship these two friends have and keep over the years. Through adversity, differences, betrayal, and lies...... Its a true testemony of friendship and where it leads.

It was a little slow going as are many books (for me) written in the persons native language. And of course as this takes place in Ireland, the brogue was a little slow going, but the story was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed the colorful characters, and their wonderful personalities. I would recommend this one. As a matter of fact I got another one by the author and will start that soon.

In the seventh book of the Immortals series, Robin T. Popp brings us the story of Mai and Nick, neither of whom is actually immortal. They are magical creatures, though. Mai is a wood nymph, which I gather means she can teleport and is extremely horny. Nick is a Spirit Walker who can travel through the spiritual realms of dreams, wishes, etc. He can also morph into any living thing bigger than a hawk. Mai is also a reporter working on exposing a corrupt politician who is not pleased about her digging into his campaign. Also, Mai's new apartment building boasts a creepy maintenance guy who happens to have a genie under his control (loosely, which is unfortunate for all of them. This is not a nice Robin-Williams-type genie.) This is my so-far favorite of the immortals series. Mai and Nick are quite amusing characters with crackling chemistry. I enjoy the idea of a spirit mate, as well. Will, the super, is so creepy he's comical, and it's nice to get visits from Lexi and Darius from an earlier volume of this series. Highly recommended. Would work almost as well as a standalone, so if you haven't read the whole series, don't worry, you won't be lost.

This is a GREAT book! I'd recommend it to anyone who's had a 'pen friend'. Ms. Brooks gives us a look at growing up in Australia. Equally fascinating is that she was able to locate ALL her former pen pals. Most of them were open to meeting her. The suggestions at the end of the story are invaluable.

I read this book while living very near the Moscow neighborhood where much of the action takes place. The book seemed to take on new life because of this. To me the book is part fantasy, part psychological study, but most of it is a very real attempt to make sense of the Soviet experience. Also after reading it, I'm convinced it was one of J.K.'s favorites too.

Like all of Dan Brown's books, I enjoyed this one. I'm glad I waited to read it because I'm more familiar with the DC area now then I was when the book came out. Lots of interesting twists and historical information in this one. My only complaint was that the ending dragged on a bit. Pages of theoretical discussions are just not my thing.
This was a disturbing book from a parent's point of view. It made me fervently hope that my own children won't fall victim to drugs. I thought David Sheff really explained the many varying, and often conflicting, emotions of parents when their kids have a problem. I will probably read the son's memoir next, but I need a break.

I enjoyed the book. But my copy is with Alvek! For nearly a year now!
