Read this for a bookclub. Stewart is a clear and lucid writer (despite being trained as a lawyer). The story of Milken, Levine, and the junkbond kingpins of the '80s is really amazing: to watch the money build and build, and then watch it all fall apart.

This is one of those books that makes you wish you hadn't just stressed out about work or bitched at a loved one for something silly. But you did, and then you go and read something like this and you realize and regret how easy it is to be selfish and trivial. This book didn't quite live up to it's hype for me, but-- wait, crap, there I go again. Damn. What have I ever done with *my* life?

Thanks to Graham loaning me a copy, I learned that many of the books I had previously enjoyed, we actually quite weak and 2 dimensional by comparison. A much longer book than I would normally read (especially considering the whole trilogy is around 4500 pages) but I would would been happy if it had continued to be twice the length. Character development is great, and a good background is even given to people whose play only a small role in the plot. The technology is interesting and creative, but almost always serves to fuel the plot rather than to show off the authors imagination. Following this book I have continued to read just about every other book Hamilton has written, and loved them all.... he is one of the few authors I pre-order from Amazon.

A nigh impenetrable mix of science and philosophy. If you can crack Hawking's code, you're in for a fun ride. If scientific existentialism frightens you, you'd best stay away.

Didion's writing takes the necessary leap from quote-and-run journalism, to observing and finding compassion for her subjects. It's the kind of writing that makes me want to write.

I really liked this book. I liked the coming of age stories of Ava, Ossie, and Kiwi. I liked how this book meandered and stagnated in some parts. I liked the imagination of it all, as well as, the magical realism which added a unique point of view to the story you don't always get in main stream literature. I liked how the magical parts were boardered in the beginning, middle, and end with realistic parts - their mother dying of cancer in the beginning, Kiwi's fight with his Grandfather in the middle, and Ava, Ossie and Kiwi reuniting with The Chief at the end. A really unique book that got me out of reality for a while and into a fun, magical land full of imagination. I would certainly consider reading another book by Karen Russell in the future.

I felt the same way - not as good as the "11" book. It was like she pushed to do the "12." It didn't quite come around to the same quality, but it was still a book the kids would enjoy.
Now, unlike the other books I've read, this book takes awhile to get into the main story. But my god, did it make me cry! So much emotion ran through this story that I'm surprised I kept the book dry. The ending broke me down a lot. Hands down The Host tops Twilight.

Just puts life into perspective, refugee style. You have to give Eggers some credit for trying something new. I felt that he fell short or has been continually falling short since AHBWOSG and this one is the closest to capturing his talent as a writer. It's interesting as he fictionalizes historical fact, for Valentino Achak Deng is a real refugee and has his own website http://www.valentinoachakdeng.com/ It seems to be down now. Anyway - I think Eggers uses a really interesting narrative device in how Valentino tells his story to nobody in particular.
