I reread this to get ready for the upcoming movie. Daisy annoyed me much more than I remember. Gatsby is so tragically romantic. In love with an idea of a person & a time in his life, something he can never really have. While I am certainly not advocating for anyone to try and redo this novel, it would be interesting to read a book that deals with the modern day kinds of class & wealth issues as Fitzgerald does. There are some definite similarities.

I could not put this one down. I loved it!
I read this twice, first without the critical text and then with. Like Ulysses, do yourself a favor and research the novel before you read it, and reference at least one collection of critical essays. Unless you like being intellectually drowned. Or just love the rush of words.
It's a light and easy read with not too many extremely important issues, but it is well-written and fun.

I love this woman!
I loved this book. It will make you smile and cry.
Jake Mallery is a young teenager living on the Conecticut coastline when the War for Independence breaks out. The middle son of a stern farmer, he is a bit of a cut-up, earning the nickname "Mal" -- French for "bad". Although staunchly in the Patriot camp and a great admirer of New Haven's own Benedict Arnold (before his treasonous betrayal), he has no real desire to go to war. But when the British attack the shoreline towns around New Haven, Jake is forced to fight -- and ends up on a prison ship in Brooklyn Harbor. The horrors he faces on board are vividly portrayed -- the bug-infested rations, the never-ending cycle of illness, the burying of the dead, the cruelty of men toward those they deem "the enemy". Pat Raccio Hughes doesn't hold back and her depiction of Jake's suffering makes this an intense read more sutiable for middle schoolers and high schoolers. And Jake's gradual realization that Loyalists have also suffered in the war feels totally real, despite his ordeal. A romance with an indentured servant in his best friend's house broadens the appeal of this excellent historical novel.

Kind of a weird read. Sometimes the zombie mayhem was more distracting than fun, but as long as you go into it ready to be generous, you'll have a good time. Only 3 stars because I felt like I was reading two different books that weren't well blended. The illustrations, however, were hilarious.
I love Deja King's books - especially the Bitch series! This book was as satisfying as the rest, and I'll definitely read the next book in the series.
