Before I say anything else about this novel the first thing that struck me, even before I started to read it was the size. It really is a refreshing change to see the first book in a new fantasy series that is not a massive doorstop sized tome. Instead it is a nicely sized book, and is no less for it. A first book by Lawrence I was not too sure what I was going to make of it. Normally I will pick things up when familiar with the author, or when there are a few more novels to his name. But in this instance it was worth it. There have been comments referring to Lawrence as the British George R R Martin, and this is hardly fair. I can see very little that is comparable, other than a few references to characters playing the game of thrones and a talent for being mean to characters there is little I would say was similar - other than both works being fantasy. The fact that Lawrence says the other two books in the series are already finished is even better. The book as a whole follows the adventures of dispossessed prince Jorg, living as a violent member/leader of a band of road travelling bandits, despite his tender years (13). He comes across a lot older, viscous, brutal apparently there on a path that will lead him to kill the man that ordered his death, and that of his brother and mother, but somehow never seeming to reach that aim. There is a lot more than that going on though, and as the novel unfolds we can see the starting point of a game of power, the disparate realms of a once great empire, constantly entering into mini conflicts trying to achieve one-up-manships on their neighbours, none seemingly able to achieve true dominance over the others. Jorg though, is determined to change that, in his mind he will be king by 15... can he achieve this against all the odds and all else that is arrayed against him. And there is a lot! Lawrence does his job well. Despite being a really nasty piece of work, Jorg is not entirely despisable, in fact there is a measure of sympathy for him. And although many of his group are grotesques, they are so in different ways making them individuals rather than cyphers. And as there would be in the real world, there are characters that are more noble than there companions, likeable and perhaps unfortunately (but realistically) Lawrence does not hesitate to finish them off when the story calls for it. There are a few moments at the start of the book that really seemed to jar - but sense is made of this later on. All in all, for a first novel this is an excellent beginning, and if Lawrence can turn in a book like this on the first attempt I can't wait to see what he comes up with in the future. (I gave it four stars, but would have given it 4 1/2 if I was able)
