If you want to read about a spoiled, rich snob whose biggest problem is deciding what tiles to put in her fabulous ancient house, this is the book for you. Eventually, the book degrades into entire chapters dedicated to recipes I could never afford to prepare. Wake me when it’s over!
These books read like Tony Hillerman novels;but much better! Still take place in 4-corners area. They move faster than Hillerman's & kept me on edge of my seat! YeaHa! I never saw "the next twist" coming. Way fun!

To be honest, I couldn't stop thinking Vampire Academy. Rose Hathaway. Dimitri Belikov. And repeat. while I read the book. Those words would pop out at me every five minutes as I got through Half-Blood. But trust me, I kept trying to separate both series even though the similarities between them are startling, you have to admit that. Regardless of its (quite obvious) familiarity with the Vampire Academy series, I still think that even on its own, Half Blood really kicked ass (in a good way), so I'm trying to judge and rate it like that. Definitely five stars and above, because really, what's not to love? A tougher-than-nails, hilarious heroine; tangible connection between the characters; a storyline that flowed pretty smoothly and was way more than believable; and who can forget the awesome sidekicks? I think it's safe to say I'll be keeping my eye on the Covenant series. ;] Longer review to come.

** spoiler alert ** There were at least half a dozen (maybe as many as 15) plots elements that could have been spun into an entire book here;squeezing them all int one short novel resulted in a confusing, twitchy and unpredictable reading experience that was not nearly as enjoyable as his previous three novels. SPOILERS For those who are interested, major plot elements include (but are certainly not limited to) 1) Sunken Treasure of Cortez 2) The modern incarnation of the Spanish Inquisition 3) The last, secret submarine in the Cuban Navy 4) Evil Vatican bankers 5) a Megalomaniac Mexican drug Lord 6) The Blackmailing son of a Nazi spy 7) A shadowy group that spies on the aforementioned Evil Vatican Bankers 8) An evil/incompetent father/son due operating an unethical international drug conglomerate 9) Nuclear bombs lost during the Cuban Missile crisis 10) Mutated flora and fauna attributed to #9 11) Chinese Special Forces working with the Captain of #3 and after #9 12) A Shadowy Assassin for hire 13) A legendary lost ship in the California desert
Do you have a book that you’ve started multiple times and could never actually finish? Maybe some other book was more interesting, or maybe a different leisure activity came along or maybe you got busy, but for whatever reason, you’ve tried to read this book several times and never really got anywhere with it. Well, one of those books for me was Treasure Island. Yes, that Treasure Island, with Long John Silver and “fifteen men on a dead man’s chest.” The one that has long been regarded as a classic of literature. And until a few days ago, I could not get in to it. Which is kind of weird, because I think pirates are fascinating, and the book has no shortage of drama and adventure. But I just could never read it through. Until now! And it was nice to read one of those books-that-everyone-should-read-because-it’s-great-literature and really enjoy it, because I’ve been having a hard time with those sorts of books lately (see 1919 and The Handmaid’s Tale). Treasure Island was great. I liked the characters and the plot was pretty interesting too. I was kind of surprised at the number of violent deaths in the book - Treasure Island has a reputation as being a children’s story and it’s been made into a movie plenty of times by people like Disney and the Muppets - but upon thinking about it a bit more, I realized, come on, they’re pirates, so yes, there’s bound to be some violence. And there’s treasure and sailing ships and things like that, so it’s pretty much got everything you need for a good story. If you have had problems getting into Treasure Island, like I did, give it another go. It’s worth it!

This book is always unfavorably and, I think, unfairly compared to The English Patient. The latter is considered more poetic, more beautiful. I disagree completely. I thought Anil's Ghost was a gorgeous book. I read it right after The God of Small Things (another perfect work), and I felt that they spoke to each other. Aside from the stunning imagery and tight prose, this is a great lesson on Sri Lanka.

(YA, 2009) Teen tributes from twelve Districts must fight to the death in an arena. Katniss and Peeta, are the District 12 tributes, and the story is told from their perspective, especially Katniss's. Lots of action, violence, and feeling, and an interesting ending. I will read the other two, probably, but not really sure I "liked" this, but it was certainly riveting.
Interesting book with a chapter on each of the Independent Colleges in Ohio. To be honest, I read more excerpts more closely than others. Some are very interesting, some not so much.
Great book giving details of sites and eateries in Tuscany. When I make it there I'm going to look up the restaurants and see if any of them are real. They sound delish.
This is the first one of her books, and it's charming and I liked the way the game became real life and Alleyn began to grow as a detective.
