I really like this book. It's a quick, easy read. And when you think about the fact that Christopher Paolini was 15 when he wrote this: it's an amazing achievement. For that reason alone, I think most fantasy should read it. With that said, it's very formulaic. It's the standard poor kid who becomes a hero story. And in the process of becoming a hero, he has to do the typical cross-the-world-journey; learn from a wizened old spell-sword who has a mysterious past; a mysterious beautiful woman; grumpy dwarves; long-lived elves who spit disdain at the short-lived; oh, and hey, just to throw you off a bit, there's an impetuous young dragon who occasional says wise things. Don't get me wrong, it's a quick read and it's actually pretty enjoyable. However, if you're getting in to this to read something new and refreshing, don't bother. If you just need something comfortable to curl up with, jump on in – it's perfect for that.

I believe I just read the Newberry winner of 2011. Or it should be, anyway.

This graphic autobiography is fantastic. The drawings are great and the author's struggle through her relationship with her dad and OCD is really intriguing.

I really like the idea of a book with different stories that link up. I would have given this 3.5 stars if I could. I would have like to have a little more depth to some of the stories. Overall it was a good read and it makes me want to go to Ireland.
Some reviewers say what would also seem obvious, that this book will be most impactful for those who have experienced loss. Which I have, thankfully not of my own child (who I'll hopefully precede in death by about 5 decades, despite living until 114 myself) but of others. Including surviving a young-person's suicide, 25 years ago, anniversary of which is in a few weeks. And I think I have more grief to release yet about that one and others, none of them have anything to do with revenge; but revenge is something I've danced with regarding other things in life. So will be interesting to see how it goes with me. At the library sale, this one was full price rather than the usual range of $1 - $3 (and then 50% off sale, of course), wonder if it was a mistake, or if it's due to the film coming out, or what.
God, with all this reading, where's the time saved for pussy? At this point in my life, I was horny enough to fuck ol' Frankenstein's Monster in his electric neck hole!
A creative story and likable characters... read the whole series in one sweep ...
visiting Poland and seeing the actual site of Mila 18 made the entire experience of reading the book more rewarding
Wow. Wish there were a 4 1/2 stars button. I listened to this one, but I wish now I had read it so I could underline some of the beautiful passages. This story is written as a journal of a young girl set in 1660ish in Boston and surrounds. It asks interesting questions about religion, good and evil, the worth of education, the role of women, family relationships, political expediency, and what happens to us after we die. All as part of a beautiful descriptive narrative. I do not know how much historic truth it contains, but at some level it just doesn't matter. It is about people making their way through a different time and place, and that is enough.
