Unusual take on the paranormal. Witty, interesting, with explanations of why people with paranormal powers probably do exist. The lead characters are attractive and unusual.

My friend bought this for me after a discussion about our favourite books - I'd never heard of it, or the author. But then I am a fiction ignoramus. Anyway. I like it a lot. It was described to me as 'about the bombing of Dresden' - so that's what I expected. It's not what I got, but I think I like what I got more. I've heard a lot of people compare it to Catch-22. I guess that's fair enough, but I would say that Catch-22 is about highlighting the absurdity of war as it happens, through the soldier's experience. Slaughterhouse 5 seems more to question how we can reconcile a massacre, through the eyes of a veteran. That is to say, in a way it's more about the aftermath than the event (hence the time travel). The conscious post-modernist motif about the 'ironic' climax ("every great war novel has to have an ironic moment") brought a smile to my (historian's) face. The "so it goes", after p.5, did not.

"Someday my words will take flight and claim the sky." This is such beautiful little book. Little. That is why this review is not going to be like my others because it would take you less time to just read this book than it would be to read my full review. So this is the Theatrical Cut. I could go on and on about how gorgeous Ms Garcia McCall’s writing is and how she seamlessly flits between Spanish and English words and explores two completely different cultures and the issues that come with being uprooted and how perfectly she captures and portrays the emotions that come hand-in-hand with illness in a close, loving family and pain and sadness and hope and about growing up and letting go and looking to the future without forgetting the past and the journey you must go on and maternal love and…. and…. and….. You know what? Just read it and I promise you won’t be disappointed. I received a copy of this from the publishers. You can read this review and lots of other exciting things on my blog here.

*it waz ook could have been bettea doe*
I saw this book got a really good review in the Washington Post, and it's hard to be objective because sometimes they are good and sometimes not so much. BUT-this was right on point! It's a book translated from Swedish, so there's a lot of (let's say) complicated names. The protagonist is a former hypnotist. He has made a promise to several people to never hypnotize again after an incident occurred earlier in his career with not very good results. However, he has friends in the police force and they call him because they come across a gruesome murder scene where a family has been brutally murdered and there is one person alive...but barely. Because the person is in a coma, the police cannot interview him. One of the police remembers the hypnotist and thinks he can get something from the victim under hypnosis about what happened. Reluctantly, he gives in and decides to hypnotize him and opens up a world of trouble. From here, the action picks up at such a rapid pace, I couldn't put the book down. We find out why the hypnotist stopped his work, rather abruptly. We also discover there was another family member that wasn't killed and wasn't at the scene. We find out that the hypnotist has troubles at home-his son has a blood disease, his wife will never forgive him for an affair (he may or may not have had) and she exacts revenge. And that doesn't even begin to cover half of it. Normally I'm not a fan of murder mysteries but this should not be classified as such. It's a fast read, some of the chapters are short and descriptive-I actually felt I was there at the climax or walking around parts of the city with the characters. My only was the author(s) get so focused on the small triangle of the case that they leave some minor characters hanging BUT I turned the last page looking for more. I gave the book 4 stars because of this final flaw with the characters but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Normally, I would give a book like this 3 stars, maybe even 2. Harkness rambles a bit for my taste. Too many unnecessary, and boring, details turn a 300 page novel into a 579 page novel- a pet peeve of mine- and cheesiness is ever present. The two main characters are often annoying with their 'issues'- Diana especially could have had more (at least burgeoning) self-awareness. But after a while, I got so into this escapist world I didn't care any more (and at least the details aren't Ricean genealogies). A medieval castle, animate house, wine, and a variety of characters drew me in. Bring on the witches, vampires, and daemons! I'm looking forward to a too long sequel.
