I tore through this book in just a little over a week, which is saying something for me. I used to be an avid reader but pregnancy and parenthood have taken their toll on my attention span. This is one of only a few books I have actually finished in the past three years, and definitely the one I've read most quickly. I adore the way Molly writes in this cookbook/memoir - her style is beautifully descriptive, and poetically concise. She's funny, and she made me cry more than once. I followed her blog, Orangette, for a few years before picking up this book, so her writing sounds familiar and approachable - like catching up with an old friend. Each chapter of the book is devoted to a snapshot from her recent life, mainly dealing with the death of her father and how she met and married her husband. And each snapshot/story relates to a recipe. Her recipes all have STORIES! I have a lot of recipes that I like and have developed as my own over the years, but very few of them come with the kind of lovely narrative that hers do. I do wish that the book had included her stunning food photography, but I know from experience that cookbook authors usually don't get that on their first books. I'll just have to go to the blog for the eye candy. Also, her recipes sound (mostly) delicious. Some strike me as a bit odd, and possibly for a more adventurous palate than my own. However, I'm definitely going to try the lemon yogurt cake, nearly-flourless "Winning Hearts And Minds" chocolate cake, chana masala, and pickled carrots… among many others. The way Molly writes about how she came to be in her current profession - someone who gets paid to write about food! - is at this very moment making me really rethink what I am doing with my own life. I love food. Making it, eating it, and especially writing about it and reading about it. Why am I ignoring that passion that I have? Should I try to explore that as a professional possibility? Will that even be within the realm of reason, considering that I have a son with wide-ranging food allergies and a husband who is a supertaster? I do have authorship of two cookbooks (well, one and a half, really) under my belt, but how do I turn it into a profession? Things to ponder as I make slow-roasted tomatoes and Cranberry Chutney with Crystallized Ginger and Dried Cherries...
