i loved this book even more when i watched the promotional dvd bechdel's publisher put out with it and saw that she poses herself in photographs of every character in every frame before she draws them. i have an affinity for the obsessive compulsive.
Was okay, then third person turned into first person perspective. I wasn't into the whole Maguire recreation of history, so this book didn't really appeal to me.

Ian McEwan is another one of my favorite writers. His prose is always a pleasure to read. His books often revolve around a central event/gimmick that has a profound effect on the life of the main character. In "Saturday" the entire book is based on the events of only one day. It is difficult to put this book down once you start reading it. I highly recommend this book. His other books are good as well. I think that McEwan is one of the top writers alive today and I eagerly look forward to any new book he is working on.

I've read it at least three times, with varying experiences. I think the first time I wanted more of AFOtD and didn't quite get it, but did get lots of other great stuff (particularly programmer-archaeologists who still knew about the unix epoch), and just want along for the thrill ride. Second time I was focused on the Focused, and got a bit blindsided at the ending. Third time, I read it quite slow and found a lot of things I'd not found before, including the exquisite way the last quarter was put together.

What's telling is that I listened to this book on tape only a year ago and forgot it entirely until I saw it on the shelf yesterday at my local library. As I think back on it I can remember three things: 1. Dr. Phil manages to say it like it is (a plus) even though he's giving platitude after platitude(a minus): "own your life," "accept responsibility for your actions," etc. 2. One time Oprah was having this hard situation with a lawsuit. Then she had a talk with Dr. Phil late one night wherein she decided that she wasn't going to let people walk all over her ever again. From that time on, Oprah has done great, just great. 3. Your life too can be great, just great, if you just decide now to use some stragety for once. All said, I do like Phil's frankness.

This is Sisterhood series #19.
** spoiler alert ** Despite the religious overtones, I find a lot of wisdom and practical guidance from Thomas Moore.

I was somewhat unsure about reading a vampire book but I could not put this book down! I am hoping there is a sequel. There are a lot of unanswered questions at the end that hint at a sequel. I am wondering if this is a book boys would enjoy?
World War II and the German false flag operation are historical facts, but Anderson takes poetic license with the details, introducing us to an imaginary German soldier known as Max Kaspar. His geniality and optimism seem out of place in the middle of a battlefield, and yet the author depicts him with just enough hardness to make his persona believable. When an impossible mission is set before him, it is easy to wish for his personal success and to cheer him on anxiously, even with an ever-present awareness of how the war finally ends. The characters in this novel are well-drawn. While some personalities may touch upon stereotypes, the author adds enough minor detail and emotional range to make his creations human and accessible. Flashbacks into Max's past help the reader to understand his present mindset, and subtle nuances in the dialogue reveal more about motives and suspicions than the conversations appear to discuss. The author's attention to speech and word choice creates consistency and clearly distinguishes each character from the next. Even as Max slowly loses himself in his role, the reader never loses his handle on Max. More often than not, The Losing Role plays fast and loose with the basic rules of grammar — and it works. The sentences, much like Max's thoughts, alternate between well-structured and half-formed, complex and simple. Sections of stream-of-consciousness writing allow us to access the protagonist's mind, while more formally written passages convince us that the author is in full command of his pen. The sprinkling of German adds authenticity, and the combination of Anderson's writing style and well-chosen descriptions gives us the sense that we are actually present in POW camps, icy woods, or an old, abandoned theater. As an espionage thriller, The Losing Role succeeds in capturing and maintaining a reader's attention; the constant, underlying tension practically demands it. The pacing is outstanding, as are the explanations of "tells" that give the German spies away. War novels are not usually my genre of choice. Even so, Anderson's book renders that preference wholly irrelevant through wit, charm, and a well-crafted plot. I look forward to the next installment in this innovative series.
