I haven't read this since I was a teenager, and I hadn't remembered much of the plot. Lord, it's depressing. And I don't think George Orwell liked women very much - all the women in this book are portrayed as either not terribly bright or actively unpleasant.

Love this author. Very good, well written. Lots of action. Many heartwrenching parts, many parts to make the reader cringe, to sit on te edge of his chair, and to be amazed at the depths to which humans can stoop as well as be awed by the unconditional love some can express. Overall, a very engrossing book.

Everyone who has written a negative review of this seems to attract trolls so I'll keep my full opinion to myself and say merely that it was not my cup of tea. Probably would have given it two stars except for the fact that it is the first book...after 2.5yrs of trying... I have ever given up without finishing.

The format of this book, a collection of newspaper columns, makes it excellent for reading on the bus or the subway. It's also interesting to see what Krugman was writing as events unfolded compared to the conventional wisdom then and now. I wish more of what Krugman predicted so many years ago had not turned out to be right.

Appeals to me in the same way The Grapes of Wrath did. Very much a social commentary that takes you out of your current life and forces you to look and think about stuff you don't nessisarily want to. It touched me more than it may have if i had been living anywhere else at the time. It is disturbing, and you will try to quell the uneasiness as you read by saying, "it's only fiction," but those of us who live in border towns know; unfortunately, it is reality for many people.

Elizabeth has meshed post Civil War and today’s modern society into her story creating a complete world of her own. Interesting, intriguing and very cleverly woven throughout. Immortals that have lived years: many years- protecting the gates and Collier from intruders and also Collier Manson protecting itself from anyone not destined to enter. This alone was fascinating!!! I’m sure the array of mystery in *Phantom Lives* will certainly keep your interest piqued throughout. Elizabeth has created characters twists and turns that will have you mind boggled and also wandering in which direction Abbi’s destiny is headed and if she will survive the evil clutches. Moments where you’re gasping, very intrigued and also curious as to which direction there paths will take. The world building was very unique and cleverly scripted, giving us fantasy, and immortals and a world entirely of its own – two worlds colliding... and entwining ! A story that flows from beginning to end, we switch back and forth in some stages throughout, between both worlds – you must pay attention here lol.. You don’t want to miss a thing - but a definite must read. Filled with a cast of characters I’m sure you will enjoy twists and turns, and a fulfilling new world entirely of its own for the reader to absorb.!! It is delivered to us with post civil war but this meshes well within the storyline giving us past, history and also a new beginning with Abbi being the missing link. Eagerly look forward to book 2 to see which path Elizabeth takes us ;)
