The Bridge on the Drina is a historical novel that tells the story of a small town in Bosnia and the bridge that defines its identity. It includes a number of vignettes over the course of several centuries from the building of the bridge in the sixteenth century to World War I. Some of the stories are quite interesting, others not so much. Overall I found the book to be very educational in terms of learning about the history of Bosnia but it got difficult to get through in the end due to the slow pace.

Think you don't like sci-fi? I DARE you to read this book and not want to read more of the series. It's character driven adventure fiction at it's finest.

an amazing look at a matriarchal society in the himalayas...
If I had to describe this book it would be Lord of the Flies meets The Hunger Games. The main character Thomas is just as confused as the reader as to what the maze contains and why he and all the other boys were put in this prison of sorts because like all the other members of this society, their memories have been erased. The Glade, whose leaders, or Keepers, keep some semblance of a society with laws, rules, and a prison. The one rule of the Glade is you are not to stay out in the Maze after dark when the walls close because of the Grievers, blob like robots whose intention is to kill. But all that changes when Thomas arrives and remembers snippets of his past and recognizes the mysterious new edition to the Glade....a girl. I highly recommend this book, it's fast paced and intriguing and written for both teens and adults to enjoy.
This book was very educational and a fun read. I now know way more about cannibalism, car crashes, plane crashes and organ transplant than I ever wanted to know! But I'm glad I read it, she is a fun writer. Very interesting indeed..but I don't recommend reading it while eating. :)

After watching the movie The Nanny Diaries a few months ago, I was left wondering if there was a book that it was based on. Turns out there is, obviously, so I ordered it off Chapters-Indigo. I have to say, that in my opinion, the movie was better than the book. But, only because (1)the book seemed to drag along for me and (2)Scarlett Johannsen is one of my favorite actresses. In all, I did enjoy the book. It was a sort of fun read. The ending made me tear up when Nanny was doing her.. sort-of speech.

I'm having trouble rating this one. I appreciate it for what it is, but I don't know if I enjoyed reading it. Its a bleak story. There is little to no joy to be had and that is obviously intentional. War is not a joyful thing. If you enjoy the "grimdark" school of modern fantasy, you should maybe check it out. If you don't like to be depressed, maybe you should pass on it.

Good book but it's tiresome to keep reading about Elena’s murdered sisters again and again and again… drip drip drip… yes, we remember, we’ve read about it before. We are finally! seeing how Raphael is becoming a more likable character instead of the arrogant ass he used to be. Illinum is, as always, a very nice touch to the story and all the secondary characters make it a better book. The main mistery in this book wasn't hard at all to guess but I really liked the way Singh developed it.

takes a very cultural approach to ideas like modernity and development, so its easy to criticize from an economic developmental standpoint. also, as harootunian is ventriloquizing through several japanese scholars of the 1940s, and yet he is making points slightly different than theirs, its very difficult to figure out when he and when they are supposed to be talking. lots of compelling thoughts, but too many half-page sentences and three page paragraphs.
