I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though it is "Young Adult," I would recommend it for a more mature reader. It is written entirely in poetry, though the types of poems vary. Each chapter represents the voice of a different student in the high school. It does a good job of portraying the wide variety of people in a high school. Having said that, I do think it puts too much emphasis on homosexuality. The Crash-esque feel of the book (all the characters' stories are interconnected) is cool, but I felt like I needed a character map to keep everyone straight. Fortunately, I sat down and read the book straight through, so I didn't get too confused. Overall, this was a great book and represented the struggles and relationships of teenagers well. The idea of the "realm of possibility" is also a great message and one that resonates well within the high school social clique scene.
i duno who told me to read this book but someone suggested it to me. the cover of the book (which was solid white at the time) attracted me. and it became one of my favorite books. and no i am not a serial killer but i read it at a pretty young age so i had no idea what the ending meant. later i was told what that meant in high school. so i still need to re-read this one

You could say "The Talented Miss Highsmith" is the American Basketball Association of biographies. It's cool and wild and has no use for conventional rules. But, also like the ABA, it all seems a bit pointless. Schenkar has done a good job of capturing Patricia Highsmith in all her weirdness, crankiness and, in her early years, sexiness. But facts are facts, and the fact is, Highsmith, though certainly talented, is not one of America's great writers, and her life wasn't exactly action-packed.

it was okay.
I'm a sucker for Resistance novels. I think it's because I (try to) study the realities of that period, which were infinitely complex, with few bona fide heroes (although there were plenty of bona fide villains). So books like this hark back to the image I got from comics and films as a kid: clandestine, tense, lots of pseudonyms and false identities. And, in my head, everyone's dressed very stylishly.

This was pretty slow moving and I didn't feel a lot for the characters. Also, the big secret that she built up ended up being pretty boring I thought.
This is a very well written book. It was like being given the power to see into the minds of men and women. The pity was that their minds were so wracked and sickened that you found yourself reading faster and faster so that you could escape from them -- escape from the spaces in peoples minds and lives that were so intimate -- escape from a despair that was so cloying you could hardly tolerate it. I did not give this book four stars because some of the incidents in the novel were so graphic that they seemed intended to manipulate my sentiments -- and drew attention to themselves. Some of the private moments were, frankly, too private, too intimate. To leave so many characters stripped bare of their secrets in the fog of their confusion seemed unfair. I do think that the book is an accurate portrayal of the way that a repressive society breeds suspicion and betrays intimacy. The characters were very human -- but all their faces were set in sadness -- and all of their hearts broken. There was not one person in the novel who did not end up disappointed in the way things turned out.

I forgot that I preorder this book and it came as a pleasant surprise when I got it in the mail when I got home from school one day. As it is the second book in the series, you have to read the first to understand this one. Once I started, I barely could put it down and by the end, I was in desperate need of the next one (that was coming out in year at the time). The story got more intense and interesting. The relationship between characters develop more and it just sucked you in. What the characters have to go through while on the run is realistic with a touch of supernatural. I fell in love with this series by the end of the book and couldn’t wait for the next one to come out, because just like the last book, it ended in a cliffhanger. No serious romance had develop at the end, but you could see the hint of one. Unlike most YA books, romance is the subplot in the series, which is what I like best. I highly recommend this book, but read the first book first! Oh, it’s also worth your money to buy them in hardback, at least for me it was.
