Loved this book. I got it on MP3 on the online library to listen to while I run-- but I had to listen to it more than when I just ran. It was such a good story and I think I might just want to "hop the pond" and live in Guernsey. It was a good reminder that every person has a story worth telling.

Predictably melodramatic background for Kato. Uriel's difficulties as a basically even-tempered, timid angel forced to be an angel of death make him an interesting character. There's still so much plot going on it's often hard to keep everything straight, but characters like Setsuna, Sara, Kira, Kato, Uriel, and Kurai keep you interested enough to want to know what's going to happen to them. I guess that's the mark of a good soap opera....

I really loved this book. It's a well written story which is narrated by Death during WWII. Death is intrigued by Liesel, a little girl who steals books, and follows the events of her life in Germany. It's a moving account of Liesel's character and how her poor German foster parents opened their hearts and their home to forever change the lives of two total strangers. The theme here is love and compassion, and "Death" does a fine job of telling this story in an amusing and artful way.

I loved The Hot Zone. Saw Preston interviewed on The Daily Show and was intrigued by his new one. So far it is the kind of book that makes you want to read far into the night. Of course now I have a "stayed up too late reading" hangover.... Just finished. What an amazing story. Preston profiles "tree climber" scientists, who study the canopy of giant trees, like redwoods. I don't know what is more fascinating...the story of these remarkable and unconventional individuals who have a lust for discovery and adventure or the story of the trees themselves, with their complex and wonderful eco-systems. The climbers remind me so much of my own son, Ian, who is an unconventional person who loves to explore the unknown and test the limits of his physical capacity. Highly, highly recommmended.

Excellent pacing, interesting characters, but like his other work, a bit weak in the end (though I admittedly tore through the pages, which again says something about the quality of the suspense here). Really, I'm going to read any halfway decent novel about Victorian Spiritualism. It's no Affinity, but it's a good train ride/avoiding residency reading choice.
really interesting insight into the world of legalized prostitution.
Nunca había leído nada de Chejov y me ha gustado mucho, sobre todo "Tres hermanas".
Great book.

Considering the author was only a teenager when he wrote this YA book, it's pretty darn good. The writing is, understandably, a little immature, but it's a good story. Sort of a combo plate of Anne McCaffery and Lord of the Rings (minus Tolkein's beautiful, poetic style). Not unenjoyable for adults either. The movie, however, looks like crap.
** spoiler alert ** This novel was pretty good. Although in my opinion I liked Life As We Knew It better. But the way Alex protected his sister Bri and Julie without his parents was amazing. At the beginning I had hope that his Mami would come back, or that Alex would hear from her at some point. But once I read that the subways had flooded and people had died in the subway tunnels, I knew their Mami was dead. It amazed me how strong Alex was for Bri and Julie. When Bri died, it didn't bother me, because for me she wasn't all that big of a character in the story. Pfeffer thought this story out really well. It was amazing. But what I noticed in this novel was that there was less details about the actual asteroid colliding with the moon. So, it was kind of like you had to read Life As We Knew It first. Anyways, all in all this was a phenomenal read.
