I first read Malcolm Gladwell’s ‘The Tipping Point’, which was recommended to me by a friend. Although I found it a little preachy at times, it was definitely entertaining, so when another friend recommended ‘What the Dog Saw’ I didn’t hesitate to pick it up. I must say that I am now a Malcolm Gladwell fan and will pick up his other books. Gladwell has a certain energy to his writing that I find very captivating and it lures you into his writing, where he impresses you with his ability to communicate, inform, and entertain. ‘What the Dog Saw’ is a collection of Gladwell’s aricles he wrote for The New Yorker and although some topics I would never have been interested in before, I found myself pleasantly amused. He makes you think. In my case, he makes me think about how I don’t think enough. Instead of taking things he learns at face value, Gladwell does his research, very thoroughly, and exercises his own cognitive ability to put a spin on things that makes us believe that otherwise mundane or unimportant things actual impacted more than we would have thought. And he does it with such energy that he makes you feel as though you’re conversing with him face-to-face over lunch. There is a reason why this book is a national bestseller. Although some articles he wrote aren’t as interesting as others, they all get their message across in a way that keeps the reader happily jumping to the next discussion eagerly.

A fun romp through Wolfe's various undertakings - in search of people and their stories.

I have to say, this was probably the best book she's written in this series. While I have favorites amongst the earlier ones (Holiday in Death and Imitation in Death being at the top of that list), this one was very well written, had a great story, and didn't use any (that I could tell) of the tropes she has overused in the past (in conversations with Mira, describing Feeney, etc). Plus, fantastic use of Peabody, one of my favorite characters.

Some lovely poems.
** spoiler alert ** Oh my freaking frack, I love this book so very much--probably my favorite non-Sandman Neil Gaiman. I'm kind of picky about fantasy. I need it to begin in our world and then move into another. The London Underground being an entirely different world, existing underneath ours and visible only if we choose to see ... I find this idea fascinating. And I love how Gaiman purposely draws parallels between the homeless and the people from London Below--we do not see them because we choose not to. Richard, Door, Islington, the Blackfriars, Hunter, the Marquis ... unforgettable characters. Gaiman makes me wish so hard for things to be real, like the wine from Atlantis, the floating markets. And he totally had the Horcrux thing as a concept before JKR!

Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith is a solid introduction to many of the things Catholics believe. However, the ideas are not just presented as a list of beliefs. Instead, Robert Barron attempts to provide a solid and secure theological basis for the ideas and concepts he presents. On the whole, I do believe Barron was successful in his endeavor. There were sections which I yearned for a more thorough explanation of a concept or a better response to known criticisms, but one can not expect everything Catholic and/or theological to be addressed in any concise manner. If you are looking for a rigorous examination of the Catholic religion and beliefs - this is not the book for you. St. Thomas Aquinas and many other heavy-weight theologians would be more than happy to fill that role. On-the-other-hand, if you are looking for a "sower of seeds" which will begin to cultivate a natural inquiry into various aspects of the Catholic religion, give this book a read; you will not regret it. Note: This book was received through the Goodreads First Reads program. My enjoyment of the book and positive review are in no way influenced by this fact, I assure you.
This was a really good book!!!!!
