Like "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," the second book in the series started off a little slow, but it really got going after a while. The plot was moved faster than the first book, and Lisbeth Salander takes a more prominent role in this one.

How someone can go and get two degrees in English and not read Romeo and Juliet, I have absolutely no idea. Why I would take it upon myself to read Shakespeare when I’m under no obligation, I’m afraid only fellow writers and lit geeks will understand. It’s among the best-known stories in history, even for people who’ve never come within a mile of the Bard’s plays. Two lovers are kept apart by their feuding families. They must thus pursue their love in secret. But it’s not called The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because they live happily ever after. The play features some of Shakespeare’s most famous and most eloquent passages; read parts aloud if you can get away with it. It’s also highly compressed, so there’s never any point where you hope for things to just move on. And even if the language is at times hard to follow, you can’t ever get too lost with what’s happening. The lovers’ plight, while sympathetic and heartfelt, is diminished by its lack of dramatization. Their courtship happens in such short order, and a goodly portion off-stage, that it prevents readers from identifying more. Yes, the ultimate tragedy is heightened because of the brevity, but I just feel like it’s a missed opportunity. (A moot point, I suppose, when the author is four centuries deceased.) In the event someone else hasn’t read it yet, do. Every love story owes its existence to Romeo & Juliet. Just don’t expect it to be a definitive rendition on the theme. A lot has happened since the days of Shakespeare. Grade: B-

I don't tend to go for historical fiction set in China, but this was a beautiful book. Lyrically written, characters all interconnected. Set just before Tianneman Square events. Very powerful book.

Beautifully written, breathtaking imagery... One of the best novels I have ever read. The book speaks for itself, I think it's definitely worth a read. A page turner... I never wanted to put it down.

I am re-reading the mature James right now and have found The Golden Bowl an ethereal experience. James' use of words as well as his deliberate failure to say things and still communicate epiphany after epiphany is staggering. The sentences fall into one's mind like honey and their sense is as gall. All within the formal right-acting of the drawing rooms of the very well to-do. I feel, reading these books as if I am under a spell. It hurts me that there is only one more of this period of his writing life, but I'm going to prolong the sleep-walking period by adding on The Portrait of a Lady, which is considered the best of his earlier books. Oh, bliss!!

All reviews belie the intensity of the novel. An 8th grade read, in which the hapless heroine is stalked and raped by a friend, who goes free due to who his parents are. Exceptionally interesting, slightly disturbing.

The early books in the New Series Doctor Who range from the BBC rather put me off, and this was my first dip back into them (thanks to the author). This is a good, solid story with some nice timey wimey in it and a healthy dash of references to things from the 90s that reminded me of my teenage years.

I liked this well enough, but not quite well enough to understand what the big deal is/was. Would have been infinitely stronger without the backward-forward flashback chapters.
