I love the flaming lips and this book definitely adds a lot of the background to their legend. derogatis knows his shit about bands and he has an intimate history with the lips, so the book is honest. which means sometimes brutal (sorry, wayne's ego). good read for any fan though, for sho'.

Each chapter of this book ends in a cliffhanger, leaving you wanting to read more. It's a great mystery and kept me guessing until the end.

This is by far the best book I've read in a long time. As a poetry lover I was immediately taken in with the first poem "The Limited" and the last poem, "Food Chain" I loved so much that it gave me chills and will be added to my list of poem favorites. This book was painfully gorgeous. The first short story "Breaking and Entering" took me by such surprise it reminded me of Flannery O'Connor's short story about the tractor. Now that I think about it, I think that's part of the reason I enjoyed it so much. The surprises, the poignant reality and honesty of the stories and characters always left me wanting for more. Also as a Kafka fan I loved the reference of the book-titled short story "War Dances" that begins with "My Kafka Baggage." There was also a continuous thread between each of the poems and short stories despite there differences - from cockroaches, to hospital beds, to ear pain, to married men looking for sex, to New York Times Crosswords puzzles to salt.....wow absolutely amazing. Some of my Favorite Quotes: "For who is lonelier than a cockroach without his tribe?" "Ah, man, I love Trader Joe's. But you know what's bad about them? You fall in love with something they have-they stock it for a year-and then it just disappears." "How well can you mourn if you continually forget the dead are dead?" "Wouldn't the crow, that ubiquitous trickster, make a more compelling and accurate national symbol for the United States than the bald eagle?

Book about civilized boys stranded alone on an island and how many of them change for the worse when no longer bound by the trappings of their old civilized culture. Horrifying with graphic violence. But I really liked it when I read it at about age 13. What’s interesting is I really remember enjoying reading it and being absorbed in the book, but I read it only once. Especially back then, it was unusual for me to read a book I enjoyed only once. Think it was just too intense for me. Would be interesting to go back and reread it, but there’s just too many other books that I now want to read.

I have read this book a man whose dreams (not daydreams) come true, maybe a dozen times. Deeply comforting, with one or two bits that still scare the crap out of me even though I know what's coming. A couple passages get a teensy bit preachy, but otherwise the prose has the beautiful calm weight of a Rodin, only more Taoist (with a side of Beatles).
This book was exactly what I needed. My friend has MS and this truly helped me understand what she was/is/would be going through. By the time I finished I thought of the women in this book as friends and missed them when my reading was over. They were honest about their struggles and what they were going through. They became a support group that my friend and I latched onto. You should read this book if you care about someone with Multiple Sclerosis. I have rarely been so grateful that a book was written.
