I can’t believe this is the first Merry Gentry book that I’ve reviewed on my website. And that makes me sad as this series has been great, up until this book. When I read in the book’s acknowledgments that Hamilton had an O-dark-thirty moment while writing this novel I got concerned. I’d still highly recommend this series to anyone, just be sure to start with the first book in the series so that you’ll fall in love with all the main characters and you’ll forgive this book’s few shortcomings. This is book is filled with plenty of Hamilton’s sharp wit, racy sex and steadfast loyalty. For example, Merry contemplates that having morning sickness in front of the murderers would certainly cause a distraction, but it wouldn’t actually be professional. While Hamilton is famous for her sexually explicit bedroom scenes, this book lacked the passion that she usually inspires. I started to feel like whenever Hamilton didn’t know what to do with the current mystery she threw Merry into bed. While these scenes certainly inspire lust, they lack an emotional connection which turns lust into passion. The trouble was that Merry’s lovers in this book aren’t the men she loves. They are men that she feels responsible for as the princess but that isn’t love and it shows. Merry’s loyalty to the Faerie is what drives this series but over the course of 8 books she has collected more followers than we can count on all our fingers and toes. Too many cooks will spoil the soup, and too many characters will muddle the story. It was hard to focus on what this story was about when every time someone entered a scene we got a summary of their history with Merry. It just ruined the pace of this book’s mystery which would have actually been pretty good if it had been given center stage. For example, Hamilton ends this story with a status update on everyone around her. In just the final page and a half of the book all these characters are mentioned: Adair, Adam, Amatheon, Barinthus, Brennan, Brii, Cathbodua, Dogmaela, Doyle, Frost, Galen, Ivi, Jeremy, Julian, Maeve, Merry, Mistral, Rhys, Royal, Saraid, Usna, and Uther. Twenty-two characters, most of which really didn’t have an active role in this book’s core mystery. Yet the history for each of these characters was provided during this book. It is no wonder this book felt slow and methodical. Just introducing them all with one or two lines would fill a decent sized novella. The ending certainly felt like a good-bye to Merry but I hope that Hamilton has one more Merry book in her so that we could see the birth of her children. She has alluded to another Merry book on her blog but it sounds like it might be a long wait until we read it. Maybe Hamilton is saving the rest of her story for a spin-off about the children. One could hope.

What I liked about this book was that a twelve-year old boy was able to outsmart fairies. To make their humiliation worse, the fairies' technology was aeons ahead of humans and they still were not able to stop the little boy genius. Stephen Stivers Mr. Rich English II 12 October 2011 Colfer, Eoin. Artemis Fowl. New York: Hyperion Books, 2001. Being deceived is unacceptable, not to mention if your friend is the one deceiving you. In Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl, Butler, Artemis Fowl’s bodyguard, and his little sister Juliet are beguiled into drinking a drug to make them fall asleep. They are not aware that Artemis has a plan for what he is doing but has to trick them in order for it to work. The fourteen year-old teenager Artemis has been fooling with the Lower Elements Police (LEP) and now he is on the verge of killing Butler, Juliet, his mother, and himself. Although Artemis is in the face of danger, he has a plan that will allow them to escape. Also, in order for it to work them, he will have to lie to his bodyguard. I understand what Artemis has to do, however I believe that Butler should know everything. He protects Artemis on a daily basis and needs to be informed about anything that Artemis is involved in which includes his death-defying scheme. Artemis knows that the drug will work because he used it on his mother and it prevailed. All he has to do is figure out how he can administer it. Then, Artemis comes up with the idea of having everyone drink a glass of champagne. To me personally, I find it a little strange for fourteen year-old teen to be drinking champagne. On the other hand, he is rich which probably means that he has drunk wine or some other alcoholic beverage before. Artemis gathers everyone and recommends champagne to celebrate. Butler senses that everything is not alright and asked, “You want us to drink this, don’t you, Artemis?” (Colfer 261) Artemis says that he does then Butler drains his glass. He tastes the tranquilizer immediately but does not attack Artemis because he does not want Juliet to be distressed. If I were in Butler’s shoes, the story would have been totally different. I would have snapped Artemis’s neck in two point five seconds then let the drug take effect. If not that scenario, then I would have given Artemis a quick piece of my mind which included my retirement. Eventually, I would feel sorry for what I did because in the end, everyone survived. After LEP find out that everyone survived and leave Fowl Manor, Artmeis is awaken by Butler asking him to explain what happened. He starts by saying that it was only sleeping pills and that they were harmless. Butler is not pleased, I would not be as well, and hollers, “Artemis, my sister is lying drugged on that couch. She was almost killed. So explain yourself now!” (Colfer 271) I do not blame Butler for his reactions to all that just happened to him. I would have been acting like him if not worse. I agree with him 100% especially because his family was put in danger. If I were Butler, I would not be as much upset if it were only the two of us. However, Juliet was involved which changed everything. No one likes to see their family in danger, not to mention their sibling. Fortunately, I received a message from Artemis Fowl. It made me realized that I need to be aware of my surroundings and what is or going to happen. I do not want to be Butler and rely on someone else when it comes between life and death. I would rather be aware of the outcomes of a situation that wait to see what lies around the corner. As many of my family members say, “Knowledge is power,” I react by trying to acquire knowledge. In today’s world, knowledge is the key to everything so why waste your opportunity? Strive to obtain knowledge because in the end you will know what will happen next.
