Malamud's prose is elegant and evocative, and made this novel a pleasure to read. So different from the film! Roy Hobbs is larger than life, and not just in the way he swings the bat; his story is a charming, if occasionally repugnant, fable that doesn't turn a blind eye to human nature. The characters are well-drawn and familiar types, and the plot rushes you along like the ghostly train of Roy's nightmares. It was hard to put down. Thanks, Elizabeth!!

A fairly decent book for those who have just graduated and have no idea what to do. I personally took classes preparing for job searcing as a requirement for my major, so I already know a lot of this, but it could be pretty helpful for someone who's never really had a job or had to worry about their own finances before. GRADUATES, REMEMBER - YOU DO NOT (and probably will not) GET A JOB DRECTLY RELATED TO YOUR MAJOR, AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE THAT "PERFECT CAREER" RIGHT OFF THE BAT! Other things of note - moving back home (which most grads do so don't feel bad), getting your first place, pros and cons of credit cards, maintaining a social life, budgeting, insurance, career assessment (do it), grad school, loan payments, scaling back spending, 401k's (start one ASAP!) -Build a relationship with your boss -display professionalism and maturity -find a mentor within the company/industry -master interpersonal relations and teamwork -network -undetake a strategic development plan -avoid dangerous pitfalls SAY THANK YOU!! I personally realized that I'd probably be happiest in either some kind of nonprofit sector, or doing something fairly creative. I will be checking out jobs in these types of areas. ^^

I obtained "Small Wars" some time after reading "The Outcast" which I thoroughly enjoyed. While the books are quite different, there are several similarities. Both books have characters struggling to come to terms with their lives, albeit in completely different situations. Small Wars is set mainly on Cyprus during the fifties when the Brits, the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots were at loggerheads over who should control the island. It adds an extra level of interest for me when a novel is set against events that actually occured, providing the author gets the facts right - and I've no reason to think that SJ hasn't. Small Wars tells the story of Hal, a Brit officer posted to Cyprus, his wife Clara and their twin daughters. Hal struggles to accept how the army operates in it's occupation, and with the acts of terrorism (justified, some would say) by the Cypriots who resent being part of the Empire. Even worse is the breakdown of his relationship with Clara as husband and wife realise they don't really know each other at all. SJ portrays Hal's mental decline pretty well, and teaches the reader a few things about the history of Cyprus at the same time. It didn't exactly blow me away, but it's worth a solid 3 stars.

Would've been much better if it included a section (sections?) of close, detailed story/screenplay analysis: why something worked, why something didn't work, approaches and subplots which various writers tried and abandoned, etc. It's an official Disney product, so it's heavy on praise and light on criticism.
another good one from fowles

Originally published in 1990, The Silver Kiss is vampire fiction with a difference and thoroughly deserves the critical aclaim it has received. Unlike its more modern contemporaries, the vampire is a tormented, dark and lonely predator, hating what he is but at times unable to control his bloodlust. His entry into the life of a grief-stricken teenaged girl is fraught with danger and emotional upheaval for both. This book will certainly give your emotions a work out. Beautifully written, this book calls out to anyone who has ever known what it feels like to be alone. Absolutely unforgettable.

This book was just ok. Parts of it were very funny but in general it didn't hold my interest as well as some books. I had no problem putting it down where with many books I have to force myself to put it down and go to bed. The last 300 pages were a little better - by that time, the story was getting wrapped up so a little more was happening. Overall it was so-so. Not horrible, but not fantastic, either.

It was OK. At times it was repetitious but I think I get what the author was striving for. The science was OK but every now and then it lapsed into a false "good for the species" feel for how evolution works, although I think these were mistakes arising from overly "waxing poetic". Another critisism I have is that I think the author could have better expressed the vast expanses of time involved. Someone unfamiliar with geologic time periods could be mislead into thinking that one generation of homonid is continuously morphing into the next.
