As one of an all-female household I am almost always curious of how the opposite sex really are in their private lives. More so than girls that grew up with fathers and brothers, every action and thought of a male is a mystery to me. I enjoyed this book because of it's insight into not only men in general, but Japanese men of different generation dealing with life, responsibility, and heartache. I takes on the heart of the matter in a slow but steady pace ensuring you will mourn the loss of any one character. Thus far it is the only Soseki book I've enjoyed.
I truly wanted to enjoy this book about a city I love, but it's unfortunate that the author celebrates one region by subjectively denigrating the food and culture of another; despite her Wisconsin roots, her sweeping generalizations and frequent condemnation of Midwestern food and culture reveals shallow research. I appreciated the thoughtful turns of phrase and personal, touching anecdotes, but ultimately this book would have benefited from tighter editing.

One of my favorite books from growing up, I wrote a paper on this in college and was reacquainted with it then. A must read for every pre-teen!

See my review for her other book. I should clarify that they were both free and I was traveling and I also read cereal boxes and pretty much whatever is in front of me.

I'm a great fan of the books of Charles Dickens and I'm sure he was a great and charismatic man, but he treated his wife so badly it's difficult not to think of that now.......... It's a bit of a tabloid-type insight into a famous person's not-so-nice side
British actor Alec McCowen's account of developing and performing his much acclaimed solo presentation of The Gospel of St Mark. (Yes, that's right. And it was great, too, I saw it twice - I'll never forget his two-fisted Jesus casting the money lenders out of the temple like Indiana Jones, or the unexpected flash of pure, utterly human spite when he blasts the fig tree for not having fruit when he's hungry.) McCowen created the role of the psychiatrist Dysart in EQUUS way back when, and like so many British actors, it seems, he's a very literate and engaging fellow to spend time wih. You feel you'd like to hang out and drink sherry with him. And I don't even like sherry.

Genius book for the decorating challenged like me, plus you use what you have! Basically teaches the science of rearranging your stuff, and magic happens! Trust me.
