That was another enjoyable installment in the Mercy Thompson series. The books are quick reads with likable characters and lots of action; it's a series I'll keep reading as long as she keeps writing them.

In a dearth of interesting plotlines, endearing characters, or a modicum of literary skill, comes this novel that has all three in spades. I was incredibly impressed with the author's ability, but so moved by this story that I nearly lost track of the fact the story was not being narrated to me first hand. In a narrative style that is reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird in its down-home eloquence, the reader is drawn into a story that is populated with beautifully complex characters and a story that I have no doubt I will read again and again.

Can't go wrong with Maeve if you like a lot of related and connected characters with a healthy does of Ireland. The entire book is a collection of related chapters--in pairs--and many of the characters are connected.

I read this book on 'attachment parenting' a number of years ago. The book starts out really well by providing a refreshing alternative to what many would consider mainstream norms for raising children: co-sleeping, no spanking, avoiding separation, extended breastfeeding etc. I think this is great for new parents having their first baby, but I found some of the principles and advice hard to buy into, especially as your kids reach the toddler stage (like co-sleeping: you get tired of being woken up by a two-year old's ankle in your groin). Towards the end the book becomes a little repetitive and you get the feeling that there really isn't enough material there to fill an entire volume. The author's views are a little extreme and creates the impression that if you ever (a) left your baby in a crib, or (b) allowed it to cry for more than 5 seconds, or (c) sent one of your kids to a public school, you basically screwed them up for life. This book will probably resonate with high 'S' personality types, who just want to avoid their children feeling upset. Ever.

It is hard to believe that this is part of the same series as Without Reservations and With Caution(two books I LOVED). I found the characters really annoying and the writing a bit immature. I am a big fan of J.L. Langley so this won't put me off reading the rest of the series but this one was definitely a disappointment.

Judge a book by it's cover. I chose this book because of it's cover, not knowing what the story was about or how the author was. And truthfully I was pleasantly surprised. It was a quick fun read, with a story line that bound me like a "spell" was cast when I opened this book. It takes you on a journey of friendships lost, found and doomed every after. Through the eyes of Elizabeth (Eliza) Williams we meet new friends, fall in love and discover that no matter how well we meant some things, there is a fine line that never should be crossed. Eliza, feel that she lost her dear sister May to the Billings School for girls and now it's her turn to go. To please her mother and become a lady, get married and be the perfect thing she never want to be. She's in love with books and adventure, so why in the world would she ever need a man? In spite of losing her sister, Eliza sees going to Billings as her ticket to freedom and maybe adventure. Never dreading of what she would find. Her room mate Catherine White and Catherine's best friend Theresa Billings - how's father is the owner of Billings - embark on a epic adventure into the world of witch craft. Soon learning that fun can go horribly wrong and no matter how much you try to fix things, sometimes it must just stay the way it is. This was an enjoyable book, and I will defiantly try more of Kate Brian's books!
