Don't read this book when you're tired. You will be very confused. Notice the four stars, though. Get awake, and read it.

Oh wow! This was definitely something… As a side story to the series, it was pretty good. I mean, the emotions were just flying off the pages & completely blew me away…just, wow! Since I’ve like Tod from the beginning of the series, I was so happy when we get to see more of his wicked sense of humor & finally know how he died and came to be a reaper. I also liked that little snippet that tied this story to the prequel, My Soul to Lose, as we were able to go back and see Kaylee on one of the darkest moments of her life. Now I’m done with this, I’m off to read the next one & hopefully, Tod would still make me laugh with his witty & sarcastic remarks.

Great book. I can't believe it is the last one in the series. I could keep reading about Gregor and Luxa and Boots and Ripred forever.

Nix pulls off the dark weirdness of this book, but just barely. Decent read, but leaning toward the "um...what on earth?" end of the spectrum.

This is really a 4.5* book, and would have been a 5* if there had been more to Katherine in the first 1/3 of the book. At 25, Jasper is a good-for-nothing rakehell, with no apparent reason for his selfishness. We quickly discover that he does have a conscience, but silly Katherine is scared enough to run home to the country for 3 years. When she returns she should be older & wiser, but it takes a social disaster that could ruin her family before she thinks of anyone but herself. I know that I fell for Jasper long before Katherine did. But what really made this a great story was the unfolding of their love - slowly and beautifully and very believably. I liked that it took time and shared events and talking to each other to help that love develop.

Antrim's novel is the work of a brilliant stylist, bringing to mind Vladimir Nabokov's best fiction. I look forward to reading more of Antrim's books.

I am a sucker for well-written and impeccably researched historical mysteries. This series by Ruth Downie is a winner in this category of mysteries set in Roman era times and places, in which my other favorites are Lindsay Davis (Marcus Didius Falco) and Steven Saylor (Gordianus the Finder). I also find any kind of stories that make use of ancient medicine or technology fascinating. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, and like my history candy-coated and this is one series that goes down easy!

The late HST isn't always a dependable recounter, but he's a merciless dissector, and his paranoid, drug-fueled, openly opinionated take on the '72 elections is never less than compelling. It's also good for perspective: now may feel like the time when dirty tricks and bare-knucles partisanship are at their worst, but it's clear here that Karl Rove invented neither.
