I was really disappointed with this book. I had high hopes from the description. Quinn's background was really intriguing to me, and especially his relationship with his twin brother, Luke. There's definitely something intriguing there. But the story just didn't work. Maybe it's that I'm not into stories that are about battered women. Maybe it's that the sex didn't feel a part of the story and just seemed thrown in there. Maybe it's that I just couldn't find the premise of their hooking up believable. But I really think it comes down to two major problems. The first is that the story jumped around too much. It jumped through time, it jumped through perspectives. That can be done, and when done well it makes a great suspense book. This is not one of those books. There isn't enough there for you to be transported into the story. It doesn't draw you in. It just jostles you about and makes you wonder what the author is up to. The second is that the author doesn't do enough with the characterization and feelings. It doesn't draw you into what Quinn is feeling. The backstory is there, but she doesn't describe the thoughts and actions of Quinn in a way that draws you into his feelings. It's hard to describe this, but it just feels flat. The 'suspense' plot was LAME. The girl I couldn't really get into. Quinn I do like. I'd like to read more about him and Luke, but I think this is an author I'm going to pass on in the future. Her writing style just didn't do it for me. edit--thinking on it, I think I rated this too harshly. It's just that it didn't meet my expectations. Everything I said is still true, but I did like Quinn and his backstory did stick with me. This book still has me thinking about it after reading it, even though actually reading it didn't give me the happy hits I wanted.

This book was okay. It read a lot like a fairytale. Which was kind of annoying. The characters were not well developed either. I guess were are just suppose to take the authors word on it the Airela loves the vampire in the story, when theres not much reason for her too. Im kinda curious to see what happens in the next two books but i dont know if that will really be enough for me to go out and buy them.

I'm about half way through. Starts a little slow but then get's going. I hate to compare anyone to Nabakov, so I won't (at least directly), but the ability to write about strange abstract and somewhat upsetting topics in a light, expressive and enjoyable way.....I'm not saying, I'm just saying... I finished. It had highs and lows, like most longer stories do, but the quality of the writing never waned. Very good book and deserving of the acolades it's received. I just went back and gave it a 4th star. It deserves it.

I breezed through this book very quickly, with many late nights way past bed time. This is a great fun and easy read. Has a Sixth Sense type resolution.

I am completely thrilled with this book and excited to have an entirely new series to read. I thought it was very smart and moved quickly but not to the detriment of complicated plotlines and multiple interesting and compelling characters. Can't wait to reAD MORE~

This is my first foray into Scarlett Thomas's imagination, and it certainly won't be my last. What a ride! Mr Y is a wonderfully witty, intense and highly intelligent read. Not to mention slightly mad! There aren't many authors who could get away with infusing their work with so much scientific theory and still have a clear and engaging narrative. I could hardly put it down.
