This was sort of an afternoon-soap-opera medical drama that delved in to the personal lives of 30 physicians and hospital employees in the late 1980s. The preface states each story is true, but names of the persons and places involved are all fictional, though I'm not entirely sure if I believe that. I enjoyed it all the way through despite this contradiction, and coming from a medical office sort of standpoint and seeing the interactions here between doctors and nurses and others titled in medicine here made me search in the stories for those I communicate with on a work basis. The focus of the book seems to be addressing the issue of the doctor as superhuman when in reality doctors are merely human, just trained in a succint field of study that has the power to affect every person. It has an interesting flow, with the POV of each chapter being first-person but being prefaced with vignettes from others that know the person of the chapter telling their opinion of them. It showcases some of the dramatics that all offices are prone to, and a few bits made me giggle (like how one can tell that a woman became a nurse to land a doctor husband). Some of the stories that the residents tell of procedures they or someone else performed while intoxicated made me feel a nit queasy, having heard of similar things in the medical system. This book goes a long way in pulling down the myth of the doctor being all-good and all-powerful, if one can get past the high-school dramatics of the individual stories.

Very start-and-stop narration; hard to get into it since there was no flow--and lots of repetition of plot points (protagonist makes a decision, explains it to her crew who parrot it back to us/her; v trying). The author is going for the hard-boiled, first person narration, and only partly succeeds; it's hard-boiled, I guess, but it's also stuffed full of one- & two-dimensional characters whose motivations seem linked only to moving the plot forward. Hard-boiled characters can be inexplicable, but they aren't supposed to be flat--especially not in first person narration--and the 90-degree plot "turns" are not interesting or mysterious. I wasn't bored, exactly, but I wasn't engaged, either. Disappointing.
If you liked The Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series, then you are sure to enjoy Withering Tights, the first of the Tallulah Casey series. Just don't forget to read the glossary first!

Good book - really gives a good idea of the hardships of climbing Mt. Everest.

I love the parables in this book. I refer to it often if I need material for a speech/story I need to share/talk about. It was and is well worth the money, and something that can be used over and over again!

Oh this is such a hard book to review. 3 stars means I liked it but didn't love it, which is true. And I liked it enough to definitely want to read the conclusion to the trilogy. However... These are long books, filled with lots of details. I really loved the first book in the series, I even found myself slowing down to savor the details. This time, while I loved the time travel aspects of going back to 1590's England, France and Czechoslovakia, and meeting numerous famous people, and Diana learning more about her magic and how to use it, I found myself wishing the book was not quite so long. It had been over a year since I read the first book, and I had trouble remembering some of the details. (like why they were going back in time) Once I did remember, it seemed like the characters forgot. And there was alot of relationship angst in the book, which made sense to me because of the situation, but I didn't much care for those parts of the book. Given their respective lengths, if you haven't started this series, I would wait until the third book is published to do so.

Good evolution of the characters and the background. Lucas moves from the Minneapolis Police Department to the BCA and through the course of this installment he picks up a ward. How can you argue against a ward?
the title of this book is unfortunate as it probably scares away a good portion of people who would actually enjoy it. it's for my book club and i don't think i would have picked it up otherwise. i'm enjoying the way she analyzes what the after effects of the feminist movement have been. it's made me think of things a little differently. i'll let you know how it ends up... ...there were some lulls but overall it's a good read. i realized last night just how good it was when i was hanging out with my friends and found myself continually bringing up sections of the book. i have a feeling the themes will stay with me for quite some time as i analyze her discussions on plastic surgery and the gradual death of the y chromosome. i wish there was a 3 and a half rating i could give.

You turn sixteen and they make you "pretty" and life is just one terrific party after another. Sounds good, right? Not everyone thinks so...
