Murakami is so good at creating this very specific sensation when you're done with his books. I don't know exactly how to describe it. Throughout most of the book, I could tell that the ending would decide my overall enjoyment of the book. The first 140 pages or so are good, and enjoyable, but I knew that the last fraction would decide how valuable the lead up is. You can judge by the stars that I enjoyed the ending. Mostly because of Murakami's ability to stir this nameless thing. He brings out this ghastly, wondrous sensation and puts it directly in your world. It's almost frightening. But you have to let it happen.

This is an easy read, but it was hard for me to stay interested. If I haven't bought the box set, I probably wouldn't read the second book...but, I'm gonna stick with it and see how it pans out. I have lots of friends who are fans of this series. So far, you have humans that are tracked, marked and sent to a vampyre school where they eventually turn into vamps. If your body doesn't accept the change, you die. I feel a love triangle brewing!

Great book, interesting to read about how brutal the Germans and Ukrainians were to the Jewish people. Szpilman's writing style is more observatory. He just tells his story through his own eyes, keeping any negative feelings for the Germans objective. A great read for any World War II enthusiast.
Everyone should read this book though it is a bit discouraging to think that our world has changed in that the terrorist will probably always be with us.

i bought this book because i didnt want to have to return it to the publisher, but i needed the shelf space at work. i do that a lot, and now i need someone to come over here and make shelf space on my own shelves... i liked many of these stories enough to give the book a four star rating, but i know i am not the target audience, because im only feeling a three. these are surreal flash-fiction pieces, and even though they are super-short, their language made me have to read them a few times to "get" them, the way i have to do with poetry (or my cataloging book today, which put me to sleep three times.) but these werent sleepy, just poetic.
** spoiler alert ** At page 250 this was a two star book but I really enjoyed Lovelock's dilemma about what to do with his "daughter" Faith once he found out she wasn't of the same species. It turned Lovelock into a hypocrite and that is what made him more human for me than the fact that he "murdered" an animal. Once again I found myself frustrated with the political opinions of some of the characters. I wish I never learned of OSC's politics because now they just pop out to me and I can't lose myself in the story anymore. Also, there wasn't a single redeemable character in the book and so I never quite found someone I wanted to root for. But the last 30 pages made me think and I always appreciate that so 3 stars it is.

a good idea from the start, but falls apart as the multitude of characters fail to develop or provide us with anything other than the obvious.

This is an utterly amazing book, the most fun I've had in decades. It's a love letter to geek culture from the 70s and 80s; film, music, novels, videogames, you name it. Get this novel. (Despite being a debut novel, this isn't as nearly surprising as you might think from the guy who penned the script for Fanboys and the best treatment of the lost Buckaroo Banzai project, Buckaroo Banzai Against The World Crime League - http://www.ernestcline.com/blog/2011/...)

Kate Mosse, you start off with such good intentions and execute them so poorly. Fail.
