Who would have thought that there would be a Transsexual in the Land of Oz?! Looking into it more deeply, this book had a lot of strange views on gender roles, some that may not please today's feminists. As I was reading I kept asking my self, "what was L.Frank Baum thinking? This is a 'Children's book' for crying out loud!" But again, as this was written in the early 1900's, I guess I should give him some leeway, since our expectations of gender roles was very different back then... Hmmph.

Meh. It was OK. I bet a lot of you really liked it, but it just didn't speak to me. Quite literally, the language just didn't drag me in.

Wow. Two thirds of the way through it becomes more than I expected. A real treat for those interested in the indigenous European/Britannia shamanic tradition as it was probably practiced pre-inquisition pre-Christian influence. Glad to know that it has been transmitted from one master to another in continuity. Beautiful.

In a not very big surprise, this book won the Newberry award. I need to try to finish it. I finally finished this book today, and found it a confusing experience. I had a hard time sorting out which time any given part was taking place in, and had figured out the ending quite a bit before it arrived, and was surprised it took Miranda so long to figure it out. Now I'm finished with it, I like the book better then when I was reading it, so probably the idea of the book was better then the execution. It read like a twilight zone episode or some other scifi tv show--and it would probably be less confusing as a tv show, where it would be obvious when different scenes were taking place.
I enjoyed the portrait of his childhood, it's evocatively written. Also, the parts about going to his mother's house after her death to tidy up and sell it are quite movingly written and seem to encapsulate the minutiae of a life. The last bit about bird-watching I found quite tedious and (whisper) didn't finish.

Wow! What a great read! The purpose of this book is to show how one can overcome many challenging obstacles in life, and still build a better future. Well done! I'm very honored to have met Scott Brown and have the privilege to shake his hand.
Elegantly written. I often hope for tidy endings with detailed explanations, but I am glad that didn't happen here.
