Masalah jodoh memang sulit diperkirakan. Bukan cuma buka mata buka hati tapi juga buka nurani, banyak doa.

Laney McCain has unabashedly had her sights set on Galen O’Sullivan for years. And though Galen has treated her as nothing more than his best friend’s pesky tag-along sister, Laney dares hope that now is the time he will open his eyes and truly recognize the woman she’s become. But the arrival of Ishmael and Ivy Grubb, squatters on the O’Sullivans’ land, diverts Galen’s attention. Though the Grubbs are crass and uneducated, Galen shows mercy and allows them to stay in exchange for help around the farm. But it becomes a decision he lives to regret…. Sometimes the Journey to Love Is Truly Bittersweet
Perhaps my brain just isn't as switched on mathematically as Kareem's, who only gave it a two...but I found it fascinating. I love books that look at complex ideas and show there is a deeper mathematical truth....and this certainly qualifies...oh yeah...don't bet against a sumo going for his katchikoshi in the final bout against one whose winning or loosing record has already been assured.
Correlli's Mandolin is the story of a woman named Pelagia and of a community on the Greek island of Cephallonia. Cephallonia is an idealized small community on an island paradise, which is horribly affected by World War 2. Bernieres does a great job of both creating a paradise and showing the impacts that larger forces of Fascism and Communism wreaked upon it. I challenge someone to read this book and not want to live in this beautiful, historic and wonderful place and with these charming and idiosyncratic people. I also admire the sympathetic characters Bernieres has created. Dr. Iannis and Pelagia are both very charming and sensible people who are memorable and likable. But there are no characters in this book who are completely unsympathetic- tormented and tormentor are both affected by the specter of war. When war comes to the island, he shows its impact in full force, and it is not just the civilians and soldiers of Greece who are affected, but also the Italian conquerors. One must admire the scope of this novel, which encompasses the history of a country, the everyday life of a small community, a war between two nations depicted from both sides, two courtships and an occupation. The style of the novel is equally ambitious, with letters, monologues from Il Duce, and overviews all integrated into the book. Stylistically, Bernieres is very solid. He writes about both the heartrending events of the war, philosophical musings of the Doctor and the longings of a young girl with both wit and understanding. Two minor problems I had: the first is the ending, which is lengthy and not logically satisfactory. I got to a certain point in the book and said to myself, “Okay, how does this go on for another fifty pages? Aren't we pretty much done?” It's decent taken on its own merits, but it feels tacked on to this novel. There is simply no reason to open a bunch of new plot threads and extend the time-line of the book to 1975 when we already can tell how things are going to wrap up. I get that Greece did not live happily ever after the war but that should've been left to a different story. The second is regarding the characterization, which I didn't really object to at the time but upon reflection is maybe a little too idealized and simplistic. There are no interpersonal conflicts in Cephallonia, just struggles against greater impersonal forces. I'm not saying there has to be a villainous mastermind, but it does tend to diffuse blame for atrocities that were committed by, say, the Italians, when every Italian is either a buffoon or a hero. Nevertheless, a very enjoyable and likable book.

this is one of the best books that no one has ever heard of. you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll read it 20 more times. pick it up and read it on the beach this summer -- it's worth it.
The first half is great, and the second half is mediocre. I would love for everybody I know who doesn't "believe in" evolution to read the first half of this book, which does a great job of refuting all of the arguments against it.

Omigod but I loved this book. The characters were so easy to relate to, and Becky's mother-in-law can certainly make even the craziest in-law seem okay.
I liked this book, although I found the psychological dithering a bit tiresome. Although I'm a former social worker, I tend to be a "cut the crap, let's have some straight talk" kind of person. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the story, and found it to be well written.
