Correlli's Mandolin is the story of a woman named Pelagia and of a community on the Greek island of Cephallonia. Cephallonia is an idealized small community on an island paradise, which is horribly affected by World War 2. Bernieres does a great job of both creating a paradise and showing the impacts that larger forces of Fascism and Communism wreaked upon it. I challenge someone to read this book and not want to live in this beautiful, historic and wonderful place and with these charming and idiosyncratic people. I also admire the sympathetic characters Bernieres has created. Dr. Iannis and Pelagia are both very charming and sensible people who are memorable and likable. But there are no characters in this book who are completely unsympathetic- tormented and tormentor are both affected by the specter of war. When war comes to the island, he shows its impact in full force, and it is not just the civilians and soldiers of Greece who are affected, but also the Italian conquerors. One must admire the scope of this novel, which encompasses the history of a country, the everyday life of a small community, a war between two nations depicted from both sides, two courtships and an occupation. The style of the novel is equally ambitious, with letters, monologues from Il Duce, and overviews all integrated into the book. Stylistically, Bernieres is very solid. He writes about both the heartrending events of the war, philosophical musings of the Doctor and the longings of a young girl with both wit and understanding. Two minor problems I had: the first is the ending, which is lengthy and not logically satisfactory. I got to a certain point in the book and said to myself, “Okay, how does this go on for another fifty pages? Aren't we pretty much done?” It's decent taken on its own merits, but it feels tacked on to this novel. There is simply no reason to open a bunch of new plot threads and extend the time-line of the book to 1975 when we already can tell how things are going to wrap up. I get that Greece did not live happily ever after the war but that should've been left to a different story. The second is regarding the characterization, which I didn't really object to at the time but upon reflection is maybe a little too idealized and simplistic. There are no interpersonal conflicts in Cephallonia, just struggles against greater impersonal forces. I'm not saying there has to be a villainous mastermind, but it does tend to diffuse blame for atrocities that were committed by, say, the Italians, when every Italian is either a buffoon or a hero. Nevertheless, a very enjoyable and likable book.
