Com o escândalo de Bill Cliton e Lewinski como pano de fundo Roth conta através de Nathan Zuckerman (narrador-personagem) a história de Coleman Silk. Silk é um professor universitário, ex-reitor da faculdade, despedido aos 71 anos devido a uma acusação de racismo derivado a ter utilizado a palavra “spooks” numa aula (palavra que pode ter conotação racista ou pode querer dizer fantasma) referindo-se a duas estudantes negras. Este acontecimento despoleta muitos outros: a morte da sua esposa Íris, o início de um caso amoroso com Faunia (uma empregada de limpeza com metade da idade de Silk que vivia com um perturbado veterano do Vietname, e cujos filhos morreram), a descoberta da sua própria identidade (um negro com pele branca) … Este livro proporciona algumas reflexões: o que significa viver uma vida autêntica? É aceitável ou não construir uma identidade baseada numa mentira? As múltiplas visões que podem existir sobre uma mesma pessoa. O preconceito. O papel do racismo nos “dias de hoje” …. (o que não significa que o livro dê resposta a estas questões) Aspectos que gostei: - A escola (universidade) e a política. A relação entre estas duas vertentes em que aparentemente a política ganha. Gostei muito quando a acção se desenrolava em torno da faculdade e/ou de Delphine Roux … pena terem sido tão poucas. - A escrita: na minha opinião cada palavra foi cuidadosamente escolhida e planeada. - Muito inteligente a ténue ligação entre Silk e Cliton e o enquadramento temporal que foi dado. - A visão e a vida de um veterano de guerra. O lado pós-guerra foi muito interessante. - O último 1/3 do livro é realmente muito bom … para terem a noção levei 2 meses a ler este livro – que tem pouco menos de 300 páginas - (bem sei que pelo meio interrompi este para ler outro livro), sendo que li as últimas 80 (mais ou menos) em 2 dias. Aspectos que não gostei: - Capítulos muito longos, vários pontos de vista no mesmo capítulo separados apenas por um parágrafo. - Achei pouco credível a “caça às bruxas” que a palavra “spooks” originou, especialmente por estarmos a falar num meio universitário no fim da década de 90 (é desta situação “caricata” que vem o peso da história … mas para mim difícil de acreditar). - O fim condutor da história nem sempre é temporal … neste caso (neste livro) penso que a história teria ganho se existisse a linha temporal … saber logo no início que personagem A acaba por morrer tirou um pouco a expectativa. - O arrastar da história, especialmente nos primeiros 2/3. - A relação Silk e Faunia não foi lá muito bem conseguida ... faltou na minha opinião emoção. O saldo final é positivo, no entanto esperava mais, muito mais do eterno candidato ao Nobel… e realemnte é pela última parte do livro e por pérolas como esta que o saldo é positivo: “- É o resultado de ter sido criado entre nós – disse Faunia. É o resultado de passar toda a vida com pessoas como nós. A manha humana – acrescentou, mas sem repulsa, desprezo ou condenação. Nem sequer com tristeza. As coisas são como são – à sua maneira seca e concisa, era só isso que ela estava a dizer à rapariga que dava de comer à serpente: nós deixamos uma mancha, deixamos um rasto, deixamos a nossa marca. Impureza, crueldade, mau trato, erro, excremento, sémen. Não há outra maneira de estar aqui. Não tem nada a ver com desobediência. Nem com graça, ou salvação, ou redenção. Está em todos. Sopro interior. Inerente. Determinante. A mancha que existe antes da sua marca. Sem o sinal de que está lá. A mancha que é tão intrínseca que não precisa de uma marca. A mancha que precede a desobediência e confunde toda e qualquer explicação e compreensão. É por isso que toda a purificação é uma anedota. E uma anedota bárbara, ainda por cima. A fantasia da pureza é aterradora. É demencial. O que é a ânsia de purificar senão impureza? Tudo quanto estava a dizer acerca da mancha era que ela é inelutável. Essa era, naturalmente, a visão de Faunia a esse respeito: as criaturas inevitavelmente manchadas que nós somos.” E continua … (página 189, na edição da colecção sábado)

Won This book through Good Reads. I loved this book! I don't usually read harlequin books but this book by Karen Kirst was nothing like your regular Harlequin novel. The story was very touching and beautiful with a touch of mystery. I really enjoyed the charater of Juliana, she was a sweet and yet very strong willed character. Karen's great writing made you feel like you were part of this amazing novel!!! Would definetly read more of her books:).

Ashlyn's Radio. The moment you hear that title you'll think oh its a book about this person Ashlyn's Radio but nope. It started out with that household appliance and became much more. This was my first true ghost book. It held its creepiness but the book wasn't engrossing enough to have me scared though it still held a mild captivating reel with the author's writing. As the story goes, it began at a regular pace with great chapter cuts and awesome characters who are strong and all the way lovable especially Caden. The story was surrounded around our protagonist Ashlyn Caverhill and how she moves in with her Grandmother while her mother is in a mental institution going crazy because of a haunted radio that her Grandmother keeps. The story behind the radio was really interesting and fascinating to read about and the best thing of all! The love story stayed like it should always in every book "REALISTIC" this clearly has a point when I rate it. The plot was really concrete and the authors' wrote about it with clear confidence that you can't help but notice. They wrote "Ashlyn's Radio" with clear uniqueness, witty characters, and a concrete plot that's definitely horror movie material! http://unputdownablebookies.blogspot....

Not as good as the last few books, mainly because it left several questions unanswered, and being the last book in the series, that's not exactly a good thing. In some ways, it felt like the author tried to do too many things, and he introduced new people and new plots without tying up the old ones first. I did see on his site that he's thinking of writing an online-only novella to answer some questions, as a lot of people seem to feel the same way I do, so I'm hoping for that. It's just too bad, because this was a good series, and I'm rather disappointed it ended in such a way.

I am torn between giving this book a one or a five...so I gave it a three. I admire Picoult's ability to take on such volitile issues and give great insight into the issues and emotions that allow people to do really horrible things. In this book she writes about a wrongful birth lawsuit (in other words someone sues a doctor for making a mistake about diagnosis or not disclosing a diagnosis of a fetus that may have made the mother consider termination). This is currently illegal in Utah and after this book, I am more glad about that than ever. Currently OB/GYN doctors and midwives have the highest malpractice insurance of any discipline and yet the people who help people get babies are probably the ones who have the best intentions. This and other issues Picout takes on in this book are what make it so facinating and so maddening. While for the most part I like Picoult's writing, I have to wonder if her editor was sleeping while reading this book. If she's talking about the effects of a broken arm and says fibia and tibia instead of radius and ulna it really ruins the effect. The peak into a life with the rare disorder Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle-bone disease) is great, but I think she went way overboard with the medical research, making her doctors sound incredibly corny. This is the perfect book if your looking for a hear-wrenching and maddening book to read...

I'm glad I didn't know Kit Carson would be a character in Death Comes for the Archbishop; if I had, I might never have opened the book. Indeed, a weight of glumness descended on me as I realized the entire narrative would take place in New Mexico Territory, between the years 1851-1888. I foresaw dust, and tumbleweed clumps, unrestrainedly tumbling through bleak moonlike terrain. These things hold little allure for me; they're why I don't watch westerns. And it's true, the novel is filled with descriptions of mesas, canyons and arroyos, junipers and whitewashed pueblos, sedges and piñon trees, mules named Contento. The main subject is the missionary and diocesan work of the Catholic Church among Mexicans and Indian tribes. But the writing won me over, slowly, with sentences like Wherever the footing was treacherous, it was helped out by little hand-holds, ground into the stone like smooth mittens. Smooth mittens. And a Spaniard speaking English in a "thick felty voice." There's a purity and simplicity to Cather's writing, yet it's not exactly lean and spare. It's full of adjectives and similes but it's never overdone. Cather will pause amid a fairly prosaic recounting of what some people are doing somewhere to spend 200 words on a grove of cottonwood trees, and every word belongs there. Every once in awhile the elegance will shock you: Elsewhere the sky is the roof of the world; but here the earth was the floor of the sky. Travelling with Eusabio [a Navajo:] was like travelling with the landscape made human. The novel advances slowly and steadily, which is how it should be read. (I think it would be an enjoyable audiobook; not all books are.) It's a novel of accretions, fittingly like the geological formations in the landscape Cather repeatedly describes. The accretions are vignettes in the missionary life of Bishop Jean Marie Latour. Nothing astonishing or jolting happens, really, from a narrative standpoint. It's not until the end of the novel that we realize the depth of friendship between the handsome introvert Bishop Latour and the homely extrovert Father Vaillant (no, it's not what you think). Ultimately this is such a pure novel - pure of heart, pure of intent, pure of sentence - that it's impossible to imagine it being written today - or if it were, being taken seriously by reviewers.
