This book is about Aileen, a pediatric psychotherapist, who is slowly going mad. Her life with her husband is a constant psycological battle, which she usually loses. Her patient, Gary/Stephen, reminds her of her dead lover, whose child she lost. There are 3 stories within, and the number of coincidences of connections between the characters is not really believable.
If you like radical French philosophy than this book is for you. Guy Debord inspired such modern works as No Logo and Canada's Adbusters. An interesting read about getting out and celebrating life, and getting others to snap out of their zombie like daze.
This may be my favorite John Irving novel. . .I'll have to see how it sits over time with "Prayer for Owen Meany." I've had this book set aside on my reading list as a treat and I wasn't disappointed. I'm a fan of Irving, but am most taken with his mid-career efforts. I have no further interest in reading about bears (they run rampant through his earliest works) and while I've enjoyed his later novels, they haven't caught me the way Garp and Owen Meany did. [image error] Cider House, however, is almost perfect. The characters were fascinating, flawed individuals - each well developed and compelling; the setting was beautiful (unlike other reviewers, I was hooked from the first page) and the plot beautifully structured. John Irving stories are never straight forward and always somewhat outlandish, but the author was neither disrespectful nor manipulative of his readers (and the affection we develop for his characters). Rather, we were well rewarded. This is also an "issues" book about abortion, and I think Irving handled this tactfully and tastefully (although don't for a moment think that medical details, including the consequences of coat-hanger aboritions, aren't fully detailed). Well done and a good service. Now, do I dare see the movie?

I'm a quarter into this book and already it is devestating. I finally finished it, and it sparked some great converstions with Anjean. I don't think there's anything more wonderful than hearing someone speak passionately about literature. But maybe that's just because I'm an English teacher. I'm sure there are math geeks out there who get all jazzed about polynomials.

This is my absolute favourite P.D. James novel. Adam Dalgliesh travels to Norfolk for two weeks' vacation and to decide what to do with the mill and house his aunt Jane has left to him. While walking on the beach he discovers the body of a woman who works at the local nuclear power plant. He meets lots of the locals, who all have reasons to dislike the murdered woman. There is also a serial killer on the loose, so potential suspect there as well. I also recommend the BBC serialized version, it is also very good.

Read August 1st - August 6th Death is peaceful, easy, but life is harder.” Daelyn Rice is a living example of this. All her life she has just wanted to die. After many suicide attempts she wants to finally be done with it. You may thinks she is some type of psycho, but she isn’t. Just like millions of kids out there she has been bullied and she is done with it. On top of that she is a mute, meaning she can’t talk. Also, she has to wear a neck brace. The bullying has gone beyond verbal. It has reached a sexual and physical level, but she can’t tell anyone because she’s afraid of what will happen. There is only one hope and it’s a website called throughthelight.com. It’s a website for people deciding to commit suicide where they can blog everything that has happened to them and find affective ways to cut their lives short. There, Daelyn tells all about her bullying stories and much more. The only problem is since her last two attempts to kill herself her mom and dad are tracking everything she does. Santana is his name. The boy Daelyn is afraid to let in. The boy who doesn’t know it, but he just might save Daelyn’s life. Before You Read This I’ll Be Dead is an amazing book that really enlightens you. Julie Ann Peters did and awesome job of writing this book and making me, the reader feel connected emotionally. I couldn’t help how much I wanted to keep reading this book. The theme really taught me a lot, such as it’s never too late to let someone in and to be grateful for the life you have. Daelyn couldn’t help what was wrong with her, but she continued to get bullied until she was at the end of her rope. I mean, why does it have to come to somebody killing themselves for other people to see what they did was wrong? Millions of children, teens, and adults commit suicide everyday because of bullying. I highly recommend this book to all ages of people who need to see that bullying does have an affect on a person and like to read realistic fiction. This story isn’t one that would never happen. This kind of stuff happens on a daily basis. You can be the change in this world and not be the bully. It’s never too late to save a life.

Sometimes it's fun to see what total jerks have to say about their own lives.
