This is my favorite book. It is both an epic, multi-generational familial drama, and an allegorical representation of the struggle between good and evil. The sprawling narrative is held together by a common story, as the characters each play their role in a novel retelling of the story of Cain and Able. There's Charles and his brother Adam, Adam and his wife Cathy, Adam and Cathy's sons Caleb and Aaron... The story is also held together, of course, by Steinbeck's stunningly beautiful prose. Every page is a pleasure to read.

Sharp historical fiction that enters the "Pope Joan" controversy. Was there a female pope? The Catholic church continues to deny it, but one has to wonder -- why the "special" chair that newly elected popes have to sit on to ensure their holy manhood? Hmmmm. The author weaves history, fiction, and medieval culture brilliantly, drawing in the reader and making a convincing case for Joan's reality. The discussion following too is very interesting. Also, check out the multitude of websites "documenting" either Pope Joan's reality or fallacy.
When Emily Fitzgerald's older brother Richard went mad with the desire to inherit his father's title and attempted to murder their half-brother Ewan MacLaughlin, the scandal tainted the entire family. Now Ewan and his new wife, Anna, are living happily ever after in Scotland, Richard has been sent out of the country for treatment, and Emily and her mother are left behind, forced to deal on their own with the contempt of Regency London society. After Alexander Cross, the Viscount Stanton, proposes to Emily on a bet, she just can't take it anymore. She packs her bags and heads for Scotland to visit her Ewan and get away from the stares of society. But from the second she arrives at MacLaughlin Castle, Emily gets off to a terrible start with Ewan's cousin, Jamie. She mistakes him for a servant, and angry at Emily's treatment of him. Jamie deliberately embarrasses her. But could something deeper be hidden behind their heated exchanges of insults, maybe even love? While not as good as Kathryn Smith's first book for this series, Anna and the Duke, this was still an enjoyable historical love story, and I recommend it to fans of the Avon True Romance series.

One of the most haunting, beautiful, amazing, nuanced, and important books that I've ever read. The Street of Crocodiles is profoundly difficult, delicious in its complexity, and while some have compared him favorably to both Proust and Kafka, both comparisons fall flat. Read this book. Buy it. Lend it to out. Buy it again. Lend it out. Please read this book.

Basically a guide to peace and being. Incredibly insightful. Somewhat upper level... but if you're reading books of enlightenment, then you're on the right path and are ready for Eckhart.
Quick Pick This is a story about a talented up and coming singer named Emako Blue. This book highlights the interactions of Emako Blue from her classmates, Monterey, Jamal, Eddie, and Savannah. Emako played an important role in all of their lives. She was a person with a good heart, amazing boice and a body to match. She was sought out by record producers and appeared to be destined for greatness. Unfortunately, the streets of Los Angeles changed all of that. Her brother has been a trouble maker, involved with gangs. As she went outside to get the phone back from her brother a car drove by and the bullet aimed for her brother took Emako's life instead. This is a story of teenagers dealing with the death of one of their classmates. Each character has to face the future knowing that their friend won't be apart of it and some have to live with the things they did that they wished never happened. I think this book will be enjoyed by many young readers, however some readers may find it confusing because it keeps jumping back and forth between characters and the reader really has to pay attention to the different story lines. The characters are believable because facing violence is a very common theme whether it be in real life or in the media. I would promote this book by focusing on the grieving aspect with hopes that it will make it into the hands of a teen who is facing tragedy and not sure how to deal with it. 5Q 4P M, J, S
I love Hornby's writing. What's better than reading a writer writing about reading? Not much in my book. He does it so well, and I got a bunch of books to go in the TBR pile.

IT was sad but I like the focus on how a decision in life can cause change the course of your life even though you don't realize it.
