Incredible book. Well written, plausible vision of the future and the environment in particular. It's a compelling story with great characters, action, and a message. You don't have to suspend belief as is often the case with futuristic, science fiction novels. I highly recommend this book.

too damn longwinded, too little substance. hundreds of pages spent to make basic points about industry.

Trying to keep ahead of the HBO series. They are staying very true to the book. A great read!

Ok, before the review let me say I LOVE Jack Reacher. There, I said it. A fictional character that makes my heart race, my synapses fire and raises my anxiety levels while I wait for another book. Lee Childs is an author Stephen King and I can finally agree on (I love King's writing but his recomendations usually leave me cold). So why then did I only give this exclusive E-book only three stars? I'm not sure. I guess because it was more than "0k" but less than "Really Liked It". Probably because it was too short to get heavily involved with the characters or the mystery, but Mr. Child does provide a pleasant twist in the solving. We find out a bit about Reacher's early life and can see the man he is going to be but overall, The Second Son did satisfy me while I wait for the next in the series.

The interweaving of two parallel story lines in this book is very inventive - one about a man in prison for murder who's taking a creative writing class and one about a man who has joined his cousin in eastern Europe to restore an old castle. Both are gripping and unusual, and it's interesting thinking about how the two narratives are going to tie together. The latter third of the book felt a little too gee-whiz-plot-twisty-M.-Night-Shyamalan, though, which is too bad since the characters are nicely developed for a while.

Went in the trash can...couldn't even bring myself to put it in my goodwill box (afraid someone might buy it).
It was written for young kids. It was enjoyable but it wasn't thrilling.
I entered a Tor.com giveaway solely because this was written by Joan D. Vinge, author of the Snow Queen and its sequels. She tries her best to flesh out the characters, but they never rise above stock archetypes, and the plot never surprises. I haven't seen the movie - perhaps the special effects helped. It's been years since I read a movie novelization, and I think perhaps it was better that way. On the plus side, the author bio at the end mentions that she is working on a new historical fantasy, so I've got that to look forward to.

** spoiler alert ** I loved this book. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it and literally worried about the characters. I was half spoiled on the ending after starting to read the description of the next in the series, but still had enough questions and worries to keep me on the edge of my seat as to the outcome of the Games. Was taken a bit out of the story by a weird plot twist near the end of the book, at the climax (the Muttations didn't make any sense to me), but this is only a small quibble. Highly recommended. Best book I've read in a long time. Can't wait for Catching Fire!!!
