I feel like Christine Feehan is hyped all over goodreads. Her plot was creative but her writing was plodding. Her exciting plot line was dragged down by Feehan's refusal to just let characters show what they are thinking. For example (pg. 193 - picked at random): Brian returned within a few minutes, his steps heavy, his shoulders slumped. He looked as if the weight of the world was on him. Either sentence would have been enough. But don't worry, Feehan goes on: Joley glanced around her to see if anyone else was watching. Tish knew. Joley could see it in her eyes when she looked at Brian as he walked back toward them. The others didn't notice, but Tish knew heartbreak, and Joley was becoming all too familiar wit it, and there was no missing the pain in Brian's expression. Holy God, unwieldy sentence. Really the passage could have ended with Brian's return and a worried glance between Tish and Joley. Feehan's over-analysis of characters really detracted from a creative plot, interesting paranormal activity and a very intriguing hero.

Wow! This is another one of those books that had me in such suspense that I COULD NOT put it down. I had to know what was going to happen, even if I was scared out of my wits at 1 in the morning (doesn't take much for that, though). This was a great, fast and scary read. I must tell you that after reading this, I will never own a grandfather clock. Ever. http://dragonflowersandbooks.blogspot...

This is my first book by Andre Dubus III but it won't be the last. After reading this very personal and often suspenseful memoir, I will venture into Dubus's fiction. Having lived in the area he grew up in made it all the more interesting. But I didn't know that Newburyport was such a rough town in the '70s. I will certainly try some of his dad's stories also.

This book is about a small frontier town, buffering the civilized world of "Empire" from the unknown and untrusted "Barbarians." The Magistrate finds himself in a moral dilema when Empire Officials come to "question" (i.e. torcher) Barbarians captives. The book examines the concept of truth, old verses new, and what is indeed "barbarian."

I was nowhere near New York on 9/11 or Boston in April 2013, and clearly the way those events affected me is something totally different and a teeny, tiny fraction of how the people who survived it were affected. As someone who could only watch and pray, I know I never can really get it. But Incendiary surely tried to make me. It threw me directly into the fire and forced me to imagine what it must have been like for the victims, survivors, and their families. A friend of mine said this about Incendiary: "This book sort of swept me up and whirled me along with it until the conclusion." That is just about the best way for me to describe what this book did to me. I don't know if it's because it's so soon after Boston but I was so emotionally wrapped up in this book, I found myself almost saying to my husband "Can you believe what happened in London? Those poor people." The images of barrage balloons over major cities and terrorism-induced lockdowns and general panic and helplessness were all too real. I do have a couple of criticisms: Some of the human behavior felt unrealistic. The style of the book (it is written as a letter that has been completely unedited) takes some getting used to. Incendiary is raw and painful and it left me emotionally hollowed out. This isn't a happy book. In fact, it will be a trigger for many, many people. But it is incredibly well-crafted and it is a powerful, powerful book. It will stay with me for a long time.
I thought this was a terrific realistic fiction for teens. Sixteen-year-old Deanna’s life has been dramatically shaped by the experience of her dad catching her making out with a much older boy in the back of a pickup truck when she’s only thirteen. The descriptions of life at a public high school in the suburbs are dead-on and it made my heart ache for the girls I still remember from middle school and high school who other kids whispered about.
I always wanted to read this classic and once Kindle offered it free I immediately downloaded and started reading it. Oscar Wilde’s life was quite notorious. Was Dorian Gray, Oscar? Dorian’s soul never suffers for his “sins” — the picture does that for him — so the duality of seeing both body and soul separately was fascinating as was the development of Dorian’s character. I also loved the sadistic but charming character of Lord Henry. I watched with awe how Wilde wove LH’s masterful and witty one liners into Dorian’s character. For instance, Lord Henry tells Dorian that, "The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it." Dorian lives his life according to what LH preaches. I also wish Wilde wrote more novels. Masterful and entertaining. Update: I just saw the movie "Dorian Gray", Hated it. It took something I enjoyed reading and deviated from the book in almost every detail. Very, very noir. So from something very entertaining, the director made everything haunting.
Lester Bangs is the master of rock literary genius...and this might be the best of his best.
