I was given this for Christmas. My sisters and I set out on a race to see who would finish first. I won. I thought this book was really fascinating and I really liked the writing style. The characters were deep and seemed real. I think it was a very good book and I would definitely recommend it. I really liked it and I'm glad that I own it. I'll probably want to read it again. The plot was emotional, but not overly so. It was also exciting, but not too dramatic. It was a good blend of love and loss. The story deals with death, lies, forgiveness, and family. It leaves you feeling good.

I was not sure whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars. A a piece of literature, it probably deserved 4, but did I REALLY like it, not so much. It was too tragic for me to really like it. It reminded me of a cross between "Romeo and Juliette" and "Mystuc River" if such a thing can possibly exist. It was completely tragic and at times I wanted to yell "Don't you see you are making stupid choices?" at many of the characters, much like "R and J". It reminded me of "Mystic River" because of the way that one tragic event, and its not being squarely faced, ruined so many lives. The writing was wonderful. I marvel at the way that authors can switch voices as they switch characters, even while staying in the omniscient perspective. I suppose we all have different voices, my sister voice is not the same as my mother voice, which is not the same as my teacher voice, but to be able to convey the desperation of Marianne, and the self loathing of Mike Sr,. the "can't we all just get along?" of Corinne. How do they do that? Thank God they do. It allows us to get in touch with human emotions that, thankfully, we do not have to experience for ourselves. The one thing I found a little lacking in this book is that the family finally became whole again after the death of Mike Sr. It seemed to me that the Mulvaney's problems were all being laid at his feet. Granted, his actions were definitely to blame for much of what happend, but every character made HUGE mistakes. Corinne allowed Mike to do what he did. Marianne was too "nice" to confront her attacker. Mike Jr. took the easy way out and just left. All were guilty, and to have Mike Srs death make it all magically disappear. Well, maybe not.

Had to read this book twice or thrice. Just keep getting more out of it each time. My copy is tattered and literally falling apart. I first noticed this on the bookshelf of my uber-cool Social Studies professor during senior yr in high school. He encouraged me to read the original archery one first to get a better understanding of the roots upon which this is generally based. At least our western interpretation. Then there's the whole "Quality" craze of the 90's in business and society as a whole which this exemplifies, however colorful the medium may be. Perhaps an ancestor of "Who moved my cheese".

Either my tastes have changed, or Maeve Binchy has changed - I have not enjoyed her last two books nearly as much as I did her earlier writings. I found the plot of Heart and Soul to be contrived, predictable, and very simplistic. Talk about "...and they ALL lived happily ever after!!" Even being an optimist and liking happy endings, this was not close to reality. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, this book did not have the "flavor" of Ireland, as most of her previous books; I missed that.
