Sad story with a twist of an ending...
I've been feeling rather uninspired and closed off lately, and on the cover of the paperback version of this book, it said "this book makes you want to be young and in new york city," and that was exactly what I needed. I don't know that I'd go so extreme as to spend a year taking dates from every man I ever meet, but it definitely made me have an open mind about dates and dating. A lot of the dates she accepted didn't lead to romance, but a good story and a strange friendship, so perhaps I shall think twice instead of immediately turning people down like I often do...

Very good writing and an interesting story are handicapped by Chute's relentless, heavy-handed politicizing. (Could she make it a little more obvious that public school teachers are the scum of the earth?)It would have been much stronger if she'd done less with the politics and explored more of the ambiguities of the Settlement's situation. I did love the characters of Jane and Mickey, though.

Don't be fooled by the happy looking frog on the cover, this book means serious business, for gaining the power to say "No", is both an empowering and necessary step to take control of your own life. Written in a warm style, as if from a personal friend, I might have used more bulleted lists and arranged some of the material differently, but "Rediscovering the Power of 'No'" is a worthy, little read. This ebook is rather in a workbook format, with progressive exercises to help you get your "No" back in gear. It requests you really look deep into your motivations and some of the reasons one might feel overwhelmed by even simple requests. Some of the suggestions and encouragement might be common sense, but they are also things everyone needs to hear again, especially those struggling with everything from feelings of inadequacy to depression. Not to replace professional counseling if such is needed, it's a good stepping stone for personal empowerment. This is part of the Personal Confidantency Series. Good, but I wanted to to be so much better. Expat family, two sisters who are rivals, dad is correspondent during the Viet Nam War and mom really just wanted to paint. I was reading a book about China and the Cultural Revolution at the same time, so some of the history was interesting, and the prose was lovely, but I hated the modern day scenes and the whole book came up short for me.

Excellent tool for voicing children that struggle with surfacing and validating the unsayable; unspeakable dislocations and traumas.

I don't remember when I first read the actual book, but I remember listening to the original radio show on a road trip with my father when I was five or six. There was probably no help for my sense of humor after that. The brilliance of Douglas Adams is how he keeps up the tone and the pace of the humor so that no matter how ridiculous it is, it all somehow seems plausible. The explanation of the Babelfish, or the miraculous creation of the Infinite Improbability Drive, are fun examples, but nothing beats the so-absurd-it's-true feeling to the description of the beauraucracy of the Vogons. The asides to the narrator or The Guide, while wildly tangential, always manage to flow naturally out of the narrative.
