This was an excellent book. I learned a lot about the life in Afganistan and how badly women are treated over there. It puts reality into perspective of the way things are. I love the way this book ended because it made you think. It also had a happier ending than I had intended it. I also liked how the author showed how strong the relationship between Mariam and Laila grew. I liked this book better than The Kite Runner.

lesley rules and i can't wait to read this, i am going to steal it right now she is the only good part of vice, well, almost. at least consistently good. and i hear it's at least a little bit about smashing pumpkins. maybe it will include the show my mom wouldn't let me go to at Roseland. I liked it overall. The story telling was really good and the characters were complex and interesting. I wish I knew more about the Dominican Republic history because much of this book takes place in that country- and a fair amount of the story is written in Spanish - I know enough Spanish to get by, so it was OK.

i will confess that this book is loved uniformly by all of my aunts, and especially by my mother. mattison talks about somerville! and this book is written using such a funky sestina-like pattern...stunning. family and love and lots of jewish resonance. short stories are great for the ol' commute. enjoy!
