I have really enjoyed reading this inspiring and heartfelt novel. I have been continually impressed by Paton's vivid word choice and ability to really connect readers with his characters' emotions. I can't help but notice that many of the characters in Paton's book are unnamed. Even characters with names are commonly referred to in such generic terms as "the old man," or "the girl." It is this tendency, I believe, that allowed me to identify with the characters in Paton's book. For although their lives are drastically different from my own, I found their stories to be quite relatable to my own.

This book is really heavy and I don't mean intense. It's literally the heaviest book I carry in backpack. Some things are explained better than others. The part on oxygen requirements of bacteria, the electron transport chain and RNA transcription were pretty awesome. There's a pic on page 567 of mycetoma of the ankle that will blow your mind. God, please don't let me get that.

Hogg is certainly an odd one. Though bizarre and scatological in the extreme, it is true that Hogg has plenty of cousins with less literary aspirations (typically with less shit-eating, though). It wasn't until a few years later that the porno publishing really let out all the stops. For instance, in 1969 when Delany began Hogg, explicit sex was already the norm. By 1973 when he finished, the majority of porno pulps were focusing on more extreme taboos, incest being by far the most popular. Of course, Delany is a bit different because he is legitimate writer with skill, reputation, and literary aspiration. Without getting much into it, I found Hogg to be an extremely effective if often repulsive book until Denny's killing spree. Everything previous was very focused, and then as the book spreads out thematically to include violence-without-sex and becomes more comic in tone, the trance is ended. I found Cocksucker's rejection of Hogg in the final scene rather plot-devicey. It felt less like the first stirrings of psychology in Cocksucker and more like a way to force the reader to end the book feeling sympathetic to Hogg. It succeeds, but I'm not sure that the book is better or more coherent for it.

couldn't put it down. Post-apocalyptic, fascist england in a comic book
I really liked the setting of the story taking place first in London, then the Highlands of Scotland. Dan, the main character, once a successful businessman, loses his job and finds himself a house husband while his wife focuses more and more on her career. He finds he no longer knows his 2 daughters and son plus his relationship with his wife has grown quite strained. When an opportunity for short term work opens up in Scotland, he, his son Josh and the two dogs go for it. They make wonderful friends and grow very close to each other during this time. Meanwhile, his wife is growing closer at work with Stephen. The end has happy and sad qualities to it. The only thing that I didn't like is that it kept me wondering...

Thank you to Delacorte Press with providing me with a review copy of the novel. Flavia De Luce is back in the latest installment of Alan Bradley's delightful series. This time around St. Tacred is being exhumed only to find the crypt contains the recently deceased body of choir member and Feely crush, Mr. Collicutt. Suspects abound and to complicate matters further, Buckshaw is in danger of being sold. Flavia is as precocious and chemistry minded as ever. The murderers of Bishop Lacey don't stand a chance when she is on the case. Best of all is the last line in the book. It looks like a long standing issue in the series may finally get resolution. I cannot wait for the next installment.

Pretty much more amazing than I thought. Especially if you love Wolverine.
This is excellent!
