Our oldest is a big fan of all things fairy, especially the various seven-book Rainbow Magic fairy series by Daisy Meadows. For children who aren't quite ready for chapter books, this book and others like it (see Rainbow Magic: Best Friends In Fairyland) are great. Our oldest loves them because they are easy, colorful, and include more stories about her beloved fairies. This is a fun birthday story that our oldest read aloud to our youngest.

McCourt has a compelling style of writing, an extraordinarily masculine style (I don't know what this means exactly, but if I were ever to try to pin down what I thought made for "masculine" writing, I'd definitely look at McCourt's book, if only to avoid the traditional recourse to Hemingway). One thing that was nice about it was that it was a memoir that happened to be about a period in his life when he was a teacher -- i.e. that happened to be about teaching. It clearly wasn't a "teacher memoir" in the traditional sense. McCourt came off as a compelling teacher, because he is almost certainly a compelling storyteller and a compelling person to listen to. It was clear he did some good things in his classroom. But, to me at least, he didn't seem as annoyingly perfect or pedantic as other teachers I read in teacher school. He also (refreshingly) refuses to analyze or justify many of his most compelling (and strange) moments of pedagogy. There were almost certainly students who were ill-served by McCourt and who couldn't stand him. There were also years when I imagine he wasn't a very good teacher. And, of course, there were surely many students he made a great impact on and many more who dearly loved him. In the end what drove this forward was the mixture of classic teacher-man stories (think Dead Poet Society) and McCourt's brisk, snappy sections of teacher/student dialog. I guess I also fundamentally share McCourt's main teaching insight, which is that it's hard to represent "the system", that it makes sense when kids resist authority and that often you most sympathize (and even like) the very kids you have to reprimand for wasting the class's time.

4 stars – Historical/Regency Romance I’d lowered my expectations for this after hearing from several friends that the Huxtable series isn’t among Balogh’s best work, and I mainly read First Comes Marriage in order to have the background for Then Comes Seduction that I checked out from the library, since I so love a good rake story. I’m happy to report that after a somewhat slow beginning in which I almost abandoned it as a DNF, I ended up really liking this book, especially the cheerful, find joy in the everyday things and moments in life heroine. Unfortunately, I also as equally and emphatically disliked the stuffy, snobby, callous, condescending, and unappreciative hero, nor did I ever truly warm up to him, even after his fairly hasty, and rather late in coming, love realization and declaration. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, despite that the hero might not have deserved such a whimsical, happy, optimistic, and loyal wife, so I’m rating it solid 4 stars. And I’m looking forward to reading Then Comes Seduction and more of Balogh’s (better) books. :)

A really good introduction to the Neopagan/Wiccan festivals - filled with correspondences, activities, lore, history and ritual ideas. A must-have for any witch's bookshelf.

Ordered this book by mistake. So many similar titles recently, it seems. But since I had it, and I love elephants, read it anyway. I'm so glad I did. It's a beautiful story. A brother and sister elephant arrive on docks of an English port, very dehydrated and nearly dead. They are taken to a rich man who has a stableman that takes on the care and healing of the two elephants. Much about elephant biology is revealed in the early part of the book. And the caretaker, Tom Page, becomes the main human character in the book. The elephants grow up and thrive with Tom's love and gentle care. But, the kind owner dies and they are sold to another country gentleman. Tom and Jenny, the female elephant, end up going to another estate, then to a menagerie. Early owners are kind and benevolent, but when the son of the menagerie owner decides to take Jenny in hand, the results are tragic and life-changing. This was a pleasant and believable read. Much more believable than the events in another supposed memoir that featured an elephant, Modoc, by Ralph Hefler. But this book reminded me of Modoc and some of his adventures.

A quick, depressing read.

Fun and a page turner. The sentence structure and wording of Brandon Mull's writing sometimes feels a little infantile, but if you can ignore that and focus on the characters and on the larger story, this book is very enjoyable.

** spoiler alert ** I thought this book started out with bang! It was fast-paced and the action kept going.. but things started going downhill for me. Bea, for instance, really got on my nerves after awhile. Colin, too. So I forced myself to keep reading, until finally I stopped at 70% through, and skipped to the last chapter. I don't regret it.
This book had my heart pounding from the minute I opended it .I love Sara Sheppards work she is amazing this series is amazing and well written I am so glad that there is more and that she keeps things interesting and unpredictable .Everything is so believable and gripping that everytime my phone would go off from either a text message or email alert or anything my heart would race and I'm not even in the book thats how deep into the book I was absolutely loved it I just finished it I think I read it in about maybe 6 hours and that is record time for me its deffinatley a page turner.
