a true epic.

I started this book on the flight to Miami on Saturday, August 25, 2012 and thanks to Tropical Storm Isaac, finished it on Sunday, August 26th. Given my interest in the Civil War, in the narrative the author mentioned many names of persons and places with which I was very familiar. I was surprised (but shouldn't have been) at the clashes of egos over the search for the missing "fish boat" and subsequently for which state would benefit from its raising and ultimately get to keep it.

A phenomenal account of the ethnic and political strife on the small piece of Earth shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Sitten vaiks höyryävää zapatistikahvia mukiin ja Jesusita en Chihuahua soimaan. Chabacanos, chiles, moles picosos, cacahuates, tamales, atole, jitomates, chilaquiles, champurrado… Kirjan tapahtumat sijoittuvat 1900-luvun alun vallankumouksen ajan Pohjois-Meksikoon tyrannimaisen perheenäidin omistamalle rancholle.

I kept changing my mind about this book throughout the whole read- between, "This is disturbing" and "This is enlightening."

Ok, so some good ideas, yeah, some excellent examples of where foreign aid goes wrong that really resonate, but the whole argument is so muddled, that you just get left feeling disappointed. We get it: when "the West" sets out to advance sweeping, ill-defined, nebulous change in a totally foreign environment for which no one in the west is actually held accountable, things tend to fail. (There is also a random chapter arguing that cold war military interventions had enormous humanitarian costs; wow, glad that's sorted) But not all interventions meet this description, and Easterly devotes only enough space to things like successful vaccination programs to establish them as counterpoints to the argument that aid does do harm. Anyway, might be worth sifting through if you're on vacation, but then Tom Clancy might be a better bet.

I have very mixed feelings about The Corrections. On the one hand, there are many very brilliant set pieces--like Chip's trip to the supermarket and the cruise--some pretty plausible and occasionally interesting characters, and even some genuinely moving moments. On the other hand, I feel that Franzen has only a thinly veiled contempt for his characters--and especially Alfred and Enid. He fails what to me is a crucial test for any imaginative writer: finding empathy for people you might not otherwise like to spend an afternoon with. Moreover, the book suffers from problems of writing. The opening chapter is pompous and overwritten; and in fact, there are many sentences that have lots of horsepower but go nowhere in particular. It's as if Franzen was doing his best to temper his more "hysterical realist" impulses--embodied in many many long, winding, periodic sentences suffused with many layers of mixed metaphor--and only occasionally succeeded. All in all, I am not sure I get why this book is so loved by so many people. Maybe I'd need to have had a Midwestern family upbringing to understand.
