It wasn't so much that the book was bad or written badly. I just kept putting it down and picking it up and I never seemed to gain interest. I was barely into the book and just didn't seem to care what happened further, even when the big mysterious vampire showed up. I'd heard really good things about this book but it just didn't hook me like it did other people I suppose.
So far, so good. I'm more than a little jealous that this guy is my age and this is his third book...

There's a story here. When I was a tween I read this book. Ok, maybe a teen, but a young one. Anyway, I loooved it. I was very into romances then. And this was my very fav romance. Luke was so hot lol. And I imagined I was Caroline. Well, anyway, I moved away from home. All the belongings I left got moved into a little room in the old barn lol. And then..well who knows what happened to all my stuff. Anyway, years later, I wanted to read this book again. But I couldn't find it 'anywhere'. My bestie and I searched and searched..had 'The book lady' searching for us. And yay, finally I opened up one of my Xmas prezzies from the bestie..and it was this book! Woohoo! I was so happy. Funny thing is... it's not so good now, lol. What-was-I-thinking? *shrugs* All that wait..and I dunno..it's only a 3 star book. But still..I'm never letting it go ha ha.

A nice little mystery. Kept me guessing, which is unusual. Not a fan of who happens to be the "first to die" as I really don't think stuff like that should happen, but overall, a good read. (And quick, considering how many pages it contains)
Not my normal read, but I greatly enjoyed it. Some of it gave me goose bumps. I really felt like I was in Charlotte's shoes. Ghostly fun!
I've seen both movies; loved the newest one, not all that crazy about the first one. Why read the book at this late date? Someone on some blog or another talked about what a wonderful writer Charles Portis is (was?) -- another unknown, overlooked great American author. Was that praise justified? Yup! The book held my interest and admiration despite me knowing the plot and a lot of the dialogue. So much so I plan to read some more of his stuff.

As with most sequels, the newness has worn off and its rating reflects this. I had a very slow time with the first 50% of the book, but the second 50% was tough to put down. If you find your interest waning, PUSH THROUGH... It eventually rekindles that excitement found in Book #1.

I just finished this book, which I had initially set aside, after hearing a radio interview with the author. The issues he raises in this book are pretty amazing: (1) There are more contractors working in Iraq than there are American soldiers. Between Blackwater (military/security functions) and KBR/Halliburton (support services), the military has essentially been privatized. Because this is the case, these contractors, representing American interests, have no accountability to Congress, the courts or any other aspect of the government. (2) What Blackwater and other security contractors do ends up having blowback against uniformed troops -- to Iraqis, they're all Americans. Death toll of US troops: 3400 and counting. Blackwater personnel: 917, including all support personnel and Iraqi translators/assistants/etc. (3) Many of the contractors serving for Blackwater are foreign mercenaries -- former death squad leaders from El Salvador, Chilean mercenaries, and others who have been trained by US military advisers in previous conflicts. They now represent the US military. (4) Attempts to put private security contractors under the code of military justice have been decried as attempts to put civilians under military law (despite the fact that these "civilians" are heavily armed and working alongside the military in a war zone).
