The tale of Third Sister, Ailin, begins in turn of the century China. Even at the age of five, Ailin knows that having her feet bound will not give her the kind of life she wants – she’d no longer be free to run and play. As a coming of age story, we get to experience China first-hand as Ailin grows older and begins to suffer the consequences of her decision. With her family against her, Ailin has to find the courage to stand up to traditional Chinese culture and find her own way to be a woman. Ties that Bind, Ties that Break reads like a simple memoir, although it is fiction. The first person narrative is certainly readable and could probably be enjoyed by readers ages 10 and up. For me, it was a bit too simple. Characters didn’t have enough time or energy devoted to them for fleshing out, although you get a good sense of the main character and the way she thinks about things. For young adults that are interested in more modern China, especially in the foot binding practice, they would probably find this an interesting read. The time period is interesting and you do get a sense of the lives of upper class Chinese and the traditional way of life. It just didn’t have enough meat for me.

I decided to read this book instead of City of Glass because it was thinner and I thought I could get through it quicker. I didn't expect to read it so fast! There was a lot of white space and the scenes were very short, which helped me to get into the mind of Janie, a girl who - whether awake or asleep - falls into the dreams of anyone around her who is sleeping, which breaks apart her consciousness much like the text. The story was exciting, although there was a point where I thought the character of Cabel, a boy who likes Janie and has extremely violent dreams, was going in a completely different direction. Was the ending wrapped up a bit too neatly (deus ex machina)? Sure, but it was a fun read. I'm not sure if I'm hooked enough to read Fade, but I liked this one. This is a book that is best for high school age teens due to the language (there are also some sexual situations, largely due to sexual dreams), and would also be great for reluctant readers due to the fast pace of the story.

I loved this book..
Decent collection of short detective stories. The most engaging story concerns some ordinary Canadian guy whose dog gets dognapped by a gang of dog fighting gangsters and he has to confront them to get the dog back.

This is one of the two most thoughtful and persuasive books I've read (along with Slaves, Women, and Homosexuals by Webb) on the issues surrounding the role of women in ministry. Sumner is an ideal writer to speak to both sides of this debate. She is an egalatarian, but openly disagrees with some of the common interpretations and conclusions. Her exegesis is very thoughtful, and the autobiographical way in which she writes is very compelling. Especially noteworthy is her take on 1 Timothy 2, and on "headship" as a picture rather than as a definition. This is a very honest wrestling with the issues. Highly recommended!
