For a fairly small book, this is super meaty. I'm not usually a big fan of the dystopian environment, but this book is just so good. The world we enter is a post-disaster (of the nuclear or chemical sort) world of Gilead, where women have been relegated to powerless roles. They are afforded comforts and relative power only through husbands. In this post-disaster world, many of the men have found themselves sterile, although it is illegal to think of say that, so the powerful men are awarded handmaids whose soul purpose is to reproduce. Offred, the narrator is a Handmaid and she narrates the story of her current life, interspersed with snippets of her former life. Don't think that this is going to be a really quick easy read. It's pretty quick, because you become completely enthralled in the story and really want to know what is next. However, it is a very difficult read topically. While it is presented in a satirical way, Offred's story is truly devastating. I had to put the book down a couple of times because of this. I really wanted to know what was next, but I couldn't bear the devastation anymore. I was absolutely wrecked by the way women treated each other in the book. Not all the women, but the Aunts especially. I hate to even think of what harm women can do to each other, and this is at the extreme. I would like to think that in similar situations women would band together and say no, but when all power is stripped, the offer of a tiny shred is often enough to make people do terrible things to each other. As far as construction, the narration jumps around quite a lot, but it didn't really bother me. It is so artfully put together that the changing times did not seem awkward or disjointed at all. There also is no given ending. And there are definitely a couple of ways this ending could have gone. As a topic for discussion, the lack of clear ending here is huge. There is just so much in this book I can't possibly get it all into a small review. I can't believe that I haven't read this book before. One small bit of advice with reading this book - if you've not read it before, find someone who has that you can talk about it with, or read it with a book group. You are going to need someone to talk to about it with.
