I love the bits of tea trivia and the character's tea shop but something about the author's style makes it very hard for me to picture the people in this book.

Couldn't get past the uninspired, unengaging prose to whatever carne populi might be within. Not sure how to pronounce the author's last name, but I hope I know exactly how not to pronounce it.

This book starts off like a crime novel with a couple of brutal scenes and some really screwed up characters. Then it's not. Being violated... being the violator... If this book is like a house and you just walked through the front door you would expect to be in the foyer or living room. You know that the door to the right will be a kitchen but when you look inside it's a porch. What you thought would be the bathroom turns out to be the garage... this book kind of does that to you. Nothing is quite what you expect but it's exactly what you thought it would be. The story appears to shift directions but then you realize that it really didn't. It's not a philosophical book but it does make you think about 'where' you are and 'who' you are (sorry for the apostrophes... and now the parenthesizes). Think a bit Calvino but not as meta. Loewinsohn uses repetition and coincidence beautifully. Walls and mirrors will never be the same... I think I might prefer a room in the deserts of the West where the horizon is out of reach and there are no surfaces to hang a Dick Tracy print. My house no longer feels right. Kind of hard for me to articulate my feelings about this book. Just read it. It is good. "Lots of beautiful things," he went on, "are filled with pain and darkness. This house, next door."

I really don't know why I'm reading this right now when there are so many others... it's ok.

I would say it is more about the abuse of power and control by a completely deluded man. I defend Lolita's innocence because I see her as a typical pre-teen -- self-absorbed and promiscuous, but never expecting someone to truly take advantage of that. I love Nabokov's style; he is absolutely my favorite author. If you like his writing I would recommend Pale Fire, one of my all-time favorites and better than Lolita in my opinion.

Very very funny telling of King Lear from the perspective of the court Jester!

I was completely drawn in to each of these stories. And I loved the way they finished - not neatly tied up, but also not some big cliffhanger. I wanted more, but could also sort of imagine what else would have happened afterwards (because I felt like I understood the characters well).

If you have not been keeping up with the Otherworld series, you will need to read Waking the witch before you read this one. It picks up right after the events that take place in Washington state. Savannah Levine has had her witch powers stripped from her. At first, she thinks it is the consequence of a poison, ingested previously. It soon becomes apparent something is actually interfering in her abilities to access her magic. Soon, the Nast Cabal must retreat to their enclave in Miami because they are under attack. Savannah learns she has a major role to play in coming events. Another Cabal in California accuses the Nasts of kidnapping a young child. Savannah learns a powerful underground movement is rising up to "out" all the supernaturals in the world, starting with the youngest generaton of children, who are doubly gifted with powers. This book is a obvious set-up for a series continuation, which is why it received 3-stars instead of 4 or 5. I prefer books to stand on their own, even when part of a series.
