This is a great entrant into the crime genre. The Denmark setting makes it a little different than the glut of Swedish crime fiction that's come out lately, but there's still the feeling of exotic chill. The story is layered and interesting, and I had to know what was going to happen next. The two POV style is different than most mystery novels I've read recently, and it really ramps up the tension. There is some stuff in here that made me squirm, but I was interested in spite of that. I was surprised that this book took me so long to read, because it seemed like things just kept happening. I do wish the ending wasn't quite so depressing, but at least it seems like all the plot points were wrapped up. I'll enjoy finding out what other cold cases Department Q solves next. I received this as a digital ARC from Netgalley.

Do you really need to understand a story to recommend it? Secrets are woven into tale and I'm not so sure I figured out any of the mystery. It is a little hard to follow but follow it you must. This would be such a great book for a discussion. I loved the Eastern European history and folklore that put me right into the Balkans. So different from anything I have been reading. I experienced the oppressive feel of living in a war zone or the area of serious conflicts. I was impressed with the insight of this young author. This quote is just an example of her depth. "When your fight has purpose--to free you from something, to interfere on behalf of the innocent--it has the hope of finality. When the fight is about unraveling-- when it is about your name, the places to which your blood is anchored, the attachment of your name to some landmark or event--there is nothing but that, and the long, slow progression of people who feed on it and are fed it, meticulously, by the ones who come before them. Then the fight is endless, and comes in waves and waves, but always retains its capacity to surprise those who hope against it."

Good vacation read. A sweet love story. I was happy when Dexter and Emma finally got together after so many years. But I am a sucker for happy endings, so I can see why some people would have disliked this book.
This novel was so gripping. I didn't want to quit reading the first night, but I forced myself. The second night, I stayed awake too late because I had to find out how it ended. Terrorists raid a party in a South American country, thinking they will kidnap the president and be gone. Because the president is actually not in attendance, they spend too long searching the house for him, and the police trap them inside with the hostages. The relationships that develop among the hostages and between the terrorists and hostages are so interesting. There is some foreshadowing of how the situation will turn out, but there is still a twist at the end that, although not earth shattering, still surprised me.

A fascinating story with memorable characters, Bel Canto is more of a thriller than I expected. In this novel, Ann Patchett tells the story of several different characters as they deal with being held hostage at a lavish party in a South American country. My favorite character is Gen, the translator and assistant of a Japanese businessman in whose honor the reception is being held. He ends up developing a relationship with one of the female hostage-takers, and unexpected twists and turns ensue. I did enjoy this book, except it was a little dark, and I found the ending strange and unexpected. I think I wanted to like this book more than I actually did, and I do recommend it, and it made me really want to read more of her fiction work.
Just like an atheist should read the Bible because of its huge imprint on culture, a person like me should probably read the Fountainhead, just to know what it's about. I still don't know what Ayn Rand was smoking, besides Alan Greenspan, but I will never forgive this book for giving a generation of rightists a pseudo-intellectual underpinning for their ugly beliefs.
A muckraker from the old time. Definitely a worthile read.

By the time I'd reached page 100, I knew that this book was going to be worth five stars. I absolutely loved it. Sometimes, the characters behaved a little unrealistically (usually when they were faced with having to accept that Olympians exist) but it didn't make the story pale any. It was interesting and intriguing with likable characters. I particuarly loved Pegs and Paelin. I can't wait for Pegasus and the Fight for Olympus!
