5 stars not because it's flawless, but because it's an important and comprehensive look at the topic. Following 3 people from different eras during their move northward helps to place us in the sweep of history--unfortunately, I sometimes lost track of who was whom, as which of the three we're following jumped around quite a bit. Still, well worth the read, and I will re-read it at some point, cover to cover, and maybe take notes :-), so I can keep everyone straight.
This was probably the most depressing book I've ever read, and not in a good way. Because it was an interesting story, and very well-written, I enjoyed some aspects of it. I forgot how depressing it was and rented the movie a few years after reading the book. Big mistake. I just remembered how horribly awful it made me feel. Read it for good writing and an interesting view on how different cultures are treated in the U.S. But be prepared to finish it with a big pit in your stomach.

This book was billed as a cross between Margaret Atwood and John Irving. I couldn't locate the Atwood component, but it certainly reminded me a lot of John Irving - the same larger-than-life, often bizarre plot and characters. Truly, the oddly-named little giant, was a very appealing character to me except for that point in the book where she uses her hard-won knowledge of herbs and plants to harm an enemy and gloat in the process. This seemed to me uncharacteristic of the person she seemed to be, and it created a bump in the movement of the book for me.

I enjoyed reading this book because of the way the author built the climax and because of how the story revolves around the life of the mute but gentle boy Edgar with his dogs. The sub-story regarding the dog waiting for his master every afternoon in the train station in a suburb in Japan gave me goosebumps. The author should be proud of having his very first novel staying more than 3 months in tne New York Times Bestselling List and being selected in Ophrah's Book Club. Both of which the book richly deserves! I agree when Stephen King says on its cover that "Life is too short for re-reading a novel but this one I will definitely read again."
I read everything "animal" under the sun and this was among my favorites! I will never forget, as long as I live, that the kid gives Rascal sugar cubes, which he "washes" away... It's funny, and sad - like most funny things.
i actually really liked this book. it was a quick read and really it was about the lives of the members of the bookclub which was quite hilarious at times. now on to reading jane austen!

Some brilliant work, but not all the stories are fantastic. By my count, 3 of these were amazing, 3 of them bland and the last one I'd read before so it doesn't count. My personal favorite is Super Goat Man, which was magnificent. Jonathan Lethem is a very expressive writer, and I can see a bit of noir in his writing. I have to read Fortress of Solitude now.
