Completely haunting. I've been trying to remember this author's name for years so I could read it again.

Preachy, follow-your-heart fluffiness. I'd be willing to forgive it if it were actually well written, but the message is so obvious that Coelho may as well have written "FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!!" and been done with it. I know a lot of people really love this book, so I don't mean any offense, but I can't see the charm.

At first, one would think that this is like Battle Royale. In many ways, it is, but there's also something endearing about it as it contains much more about why the Games occur, and also the psychological mind games to outwit the Gamemakers. Best of all, it' first part of a trilogy, and we get to follow the story about the winners after the actual game ends.

One of the most unique books I've encountered. Beyond the fact that it ends mid-sentence (cue Kafka dying of tuberculosis here) there's also the self-destructing plot and a general narrative stucture that is best described as the second law of thermodynamics (you down with entropy?) let loose on paper. Kafka has a real gift for taking the bureacratic madness everyone sees everyday and turning it into surreal and often comic poetry that becomes increasingly claustrophobic at a geometric rate. The prose almost becomes the literary equivalent of white noise towards the end which made me pay less attention to the details and eventually learned to process it like the air conditioner buzzing in the background. Perhaps Kafka was proposing that the only way to deal with social nightmares is to push them into the background instead of analyzing them as that just leads to more of a problem? Maybe this is why he wanted all of his works burned after his death (way to not carry that out, Max Brod)? But maybe there's a chance to analyze and a time to ignore and the trick it to know when to take each path? Um, as this is where my mom would probably mock lighting up a joint if I was saying this out loud to her I should probably stop now :)

Not quite the obsession-creating book that the first one was, but still very satisfying. Candy's adventures in the Abarat are....I just need to read more. I can't wait for the third book to come out!

I was a kid when I read this and this was not an assignment but I was intrigued to read it because I saw the film. The book is much better than the movie. I could NOT believe how nasty the mother treated her own children but she was trying to KILL her children to receive a huge inheritance from her family. Read the story! It will captivate you to the point where you do not want to stop reading! I think I read this book in about 3 or 4 days.

Best part was the relationship between Edgar and his dogs. Since I read this one in spurts over the course of a few months, I'd like to go back and re-read the story with more continuity - I think that would have helped me become more absorbed in the plot.

Seabiscuit is one of my favorite books so I was very happy to see Laura Hillenbrand had another book out. This author is truly captivating. This book makes me think of words: Survival, Resilience and Redemption are some. Dignity and belief (not hope surprisingly) are some of the others. Shark is another - but that's only a small portion of this book. And once again ... the biggest word is forgiveness. I think everyone needs to know what some men have done for our freedoms and I think we owe a huge thank you to these individuals. These individuals that have given some or given all. Louis Zamperini's story is incredible and amazingly he survived the physical endurances he was faced with - even the emotional ghosts that haunted him after the war. It's hard to believe the country went through such a time and also the POW's in the pacific. Great read.
3rd book in the series. provides an excellent perspective on contemporary southern africa (a quick mystery fiction read though). it's a very popular series, and i would highly recommend one or two. after that, they tend to get repetitive and boring.
