This Japanese classic is hissing with dry wit. Has many classic lines that leave me in stitches. The protaganist is - you guessed it - a cat that spends its time observing its owner and making scathing remarks about human foibles. Characterisation is a big thing for me and, unfortunately, I don't like the characters very much. And at 636 pages, this three-volume monster is too much for even cat fanatics.
I don't remember this book. I read this when I was in elementary school. I really don't remember it. I know I didn't like it that much, I would never reread it or really recommened it. Maybe little kids would like it but I'm not so sure. So thats it for now.

russo paints a portrait of small town life with fantastic, fastidious attention to the emotional and social complexities faced by the town's inhabitants. the story is marred but a somewhat subpar ending . . . the film version of this--a mini series featuring paul newman--was faithful without being dull. though ed harris lacks the physical girth to flesh out the role, he was a credible miles.

Elsa's life has never been easy, but when she meets a nurse when she is sixteen, she finds a direction in her life. Eventually, she joins an aid group and ends up in Afghanistan. It is here that her life completely changes. She becomes the head nurse and administrator at a small hospital in an even smaller village. The conditions there are like nothing she has ever seen, as in no running water or electricity. It made me seriously think about everything I have and don't have. This book made a lot of wants and desires seem trivial; there are people with genuine needs in this world that too often I forget about. Elsa becomes friends with Parween, and other people in the village, and they change her life. They make her a stronger, more confident person. She also meets Dave and Mike, two special forces soldiers who will also change her life. There is a little bit of romance thrown in this book, and it does not take away from the story at all. It is sweet and innocent and just adds to the overall beauty of the story. Not only do you hear Elsa's story, but Parween's story is also woven in, and hers is one of serious heartbreak and courage.

A friend of mine gave this to me for my birthday. Its looks like an eye-opening book.
Catherine LeVendeur finds herself enmeshed in mysterious occurrences again in this tenth novel in the series. This time, Catherine's noble relations appear to be suffering from a curse as a well dries up and a besieging army approaches. Despite the legends and stories, the practical Catherine attempts to cut through the tales in order to discover the truth behind the strange happenings. As always, Sharan Newman excels in creating a believable portrayal of the medieval world as well as weaving a gripping plot.
What an eye-opening book by such an imaginative author. I had trouble putting it down, as I wanted to find out more about what would happen to a five year old and his mom trapped in a 11x11" room. The story is narrated by the five-year-old Jack who spends his entire life in the Room. What is actually happening to the mother and son is something from a nightmare, but their day to day life seems bitter sweet and fun to the readers; Jack's innocent perspective somehow puts a filter on the horrors. Eventually Jack and his mom escape the Room into the real world where he experiences everything for the first time. His idea of the entire world was only the Room he was trapped in and now he struggles to fit into the society. He notices things that a normal human being in a modern society wouldn't notice and he learns things the hard way: things such as why you can't pet a bee or why you can't just take toys from stores. It was a very entertaining book and made me imagine what it would be like to see the world for the first time.
Ann Charles has the "touch" when it comes to delivering the perfect blend of snarky realistic humor and fun. I fell in love with Violet and her twin 10 year-olds Layne and Addie with the first book in the series (well Addy and Layne if Addie has anything to say since she is 10 minutes older than Layne). I had picked it up on a lark when it was first released and ended up reading it instead of working on my classwork. It was well worth getting up at early to finish my work just to sit there and laugh so hard over and over again! How can you resist a little girl who liberates chickens and names them Elvis! Violet is at the top of my list as favorite female protagonists. Most lead female characters in today's genre fiction tend to be beautiful blonds with the prefect bodies and Kenjutsu form that look mighty fine with their rippled muscular bodies from the hours of Tai Chi with some ancient monk up in their secret mountain hideout. It is nice, occasionally and though I do read those books I tend not to admit to doing so. With Violet, you get a real woman struggling to support her children despite dealing with ghosts, misogynistic co-workers, crazy sex-addicted senior citizens, pet chickens and children who like to dig up bones in the back yard. Her boobs are sagging a bit, she still carries around her baby fat and her hair maybe blond, but it certainly doesn't lay perfect and is constantly looking like Elvis (the chicken) helped style it! Her ghost smelling secret boyfriend finds her sexy, doesn't mind a bit that occasionally she likes to snuggle up with a bowl of ice cream instead of him and that she sleeps in an Elvis t-shirt and boxer shorts (well he thought it was slinky satin nightgown but I digress). One way these wonderful books work is each ends with a bang and starts with a bang. Which is why you will have fans saying things like this in their reviews - "...And of course the end leaves you wishing the next book was ready to be read!! I am dying a slow death and may survive only if the 4th book comes out soon!!!" When I opened up the book and read the first sentence with her standing over a headless corpse (who was found clutching her business card) at the "butt-crack of dawn" I laughed so loud the cat ended up under the bed!. Violet still was struggling to keep her job and this time it was do or die hour. The little bit of sweat left on her freshly waxed lip was not from the caramel latte she just picked up, it was the fact that if she not only sell the houses she had on the market, but =she had to bring in an even bigger fish. So when an Abe Lincoln stepped into Calamity Jane Reality and asked if she would help him buy the hotel for sale in town and she asked which one... Murphy peeked out of his law office waving his magical gavel and Abe answered "the haunted one." The pace is fast, the dialogue is witty, smooth and natural. I can totally believe it all! Ask my friends heck read my blog! I have conversations like Violet has (both internally and out loud) ALL the time! For the true mystery aficionados this will keep you guessing and trust me, at the end will have you going "WHAT! WAIT when is book four coming out!" Heck, even the most despicable characters in the novel are so compelling you love to hate them! (Though I think in the end there is a special kind of justice for one specific one..*wagging finger* nuh uh uh! No spoilers my friends!) Congratulations Ann Charles!
